Superman: The Animated Series - not too successful?

The show only lasted one series. When they first came out, I wasn't a fan but am watching them again on cable. Like them much better.

I guess the show wasn't that succesful.

Probably not a critical dahling like Batman was.

I like their retelling of the characters and their origins. Although, I liked it better when Lana Lang only liked Clark Kent and not Superrman. I like the new Greenlantern.

But this show seems aimed at kids only - not adults and kids like Batman: animiated series.

Didn't it have 3 or 4 seasons? That sounds successful to me. Plus JL is a natural continuation of Superman:TAS.

Please don't soil the JL cartoons by making them an off-spin of the horrible black hole that was the Superman animated series.

They tried to take their success with Batman and try it with Superman. It did not work.

Excellent show. How is four seasons unsuccessful?

The Legacy finale was damn spectacular.

When you think about it... the Bruce Timm/Paul Dini DC Universe has been on tv for 13+ years and is still strong.

I don't get the hate... to me, JL is an extension of Superman TAS, they even reference multiple episodes of the Superman show.

I don't get the "not made for adults as opposed to Batman TAS" though. Do people consider Batman more mature because it was darker or something? Superman does live in a brighter world... though it was pretty reliant on guest stars (which is the part of it I liked the best). I mean, they had the Legion of Superheroes show up!

Yep... I love how they've maintained the continuity thus far.

I ment didn't it only have one season? I didn't know it had four. I thought it only had one......guess it just fell of my own personal radar.

Although season four only had 3 episodes and one was a two parter.

Without giving away the plot details what is legacy? An attempt to wrap up the Superman mythos? Like Julius Schwart's last comic -- What Ever happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

Fuji - Batman dealt with more complex stories. Superman show seems to exist on only one level.

I liked it also but do think it was aimed more kids which isn't a bad thing. He is a big boyscott unlike the bat. There wasn't anything on superman on the level of say "The man that has everything" or even "Clash". It never got out of the saturday morning level. Batman on the other hand came on like at 8, was much darker, and had shows more adults would like.

I went to see Alex Ross and he correctly observed that in the room full of 300 people that there were no kids.

It's "good" that they are trying to get kids interested but I like when it works for both groups. Like Willy Wonka (the original). Anyone see the Krypto series...now that's aimed at kids.

Sure Batman had darker stories because hey, he's a darker character. Not to belittle the great stories Superman has had over the years (one of which was done as a JLU episode). The show was brighter, perhaps it was less complex, but you can't tell me the inclusion of Dr. Fate, Flash, Green Lantern, the New Gods, and especially the Legion of Superheroes wasn't at least in part to attract the older viewers who actually knew who these characters were.

Also, there were at least a few episodes that were pretty dark... and they brought up the notion of what a rogue Superman could do, which directly carried over to this past season of JLU.

It was Animated and the seasons were broken up very differently. Batman: TAS for example had 60 episodes in the first season, 10 in the second 10 in the third and 5 in the fourth. So that as your argument is pointless.

People like Batman better because it had a darker tone and wasn't so bright. But that is the basic idea and difference between Batman and Superman. Besides that, Metroplis is a Gotham city in light.

I loved Superman and it did do very well. I wouldn't call it a failure on any level. If it was, we would have never had Batman Beyond or JLU.

My arguement is pointless. Maybe that word doesn't think what you think it means. (Isn't that quote from a movie. Anyone know what movie?)

Why would Batman have so many episodes in the first season and so little in following seasons? I'm not sure how these things work. Was it supposed to be prime time? I remember that they put a few episodes on fox at 8pm or so and it didn't do well.

I would have thought that there would be only 10 episodes in the first season to test the waters....

Anyone know these things?

Superman was a decent series. Some Good Guest Stars.

I see Season 3 of JLU starts Sept 17th with two episodes. 10-11 PM EST.
Also two new episodes on Sept 24th.
YAY!!!

Oh man, Superman:TAS was the fist to bring one of my favorite heroes Dr. Fate to the tv screen. I was so excited to see him and to see him so well done. That's when I knew this series rocked. Kids would have no idea who Dr. Fate is.

I loved Superman: TAS and am glad that they're keeping continuity with it via JLU. The same holds true for Batman Beyond.

I thought Superman TAS was a fair spinoff, a high quality animated series that must have got overshadowed by it's much more succesful counterpart, Batman TAS. The most memorable character in this show was of course Lex Luthor.

What about the 2 part ep where that Darkseid killed that Detective? That was shockingly heavy and full of emotion.
