I received my flyer from Target this week and they have a list of DVDs on sale for $7.50. Nothing great, the usual, predictable stuff. But, lo and behold, pictured is a copy of the SE of West Side Story! The one that can't be had for under $20. It's most likely a misprint, but will they honor it? The sale starts tomorrow.

Target is notorious for using the Special Edition picture for the their 7.50 sales ad and then not honoring it once you get to the store. They usually don't honor it by simply not having one single copy of the Special Edition pictured and a plethora of the raggedy bare bones editions of the movies.
It has happened to me on the:
Dances With Wolves Special Edition
The Good, the Bad , and the Ugly Special Edition
However, Wal-Mart did match their price on both of these sets. Its sad business for Target in my opinion.

A big YMMV. The PM will be a big enough difference that the cashier will have to get approval from a superior. I was able to get The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for $7.50, but I was turned down on some others. It all depends on what mood the boss happens to be in at the time.

They always cut out the part of the flier with the cheaper price. I actually got a bunch of fliers from Target. I thought they'd have them out in front like most stores, but they have them behind the guest services desk. The lady gave me a hard time when I asked for a bunch, but she gave them to me anyway. I also found a couple of stray ones in shopping carts on my way out.
In terms of the PM, it only took a few mins at CC so that they could contact the manager. At BB it was really easy. He just scrutinized the ad to see if it was the same DVD and wrote up some form and gave it to me.

I was surprised to actually get in on this deal. I’m usually thwarted one way or the other. Last time Target screwed up Circuit City was out and Target wouldn’t honor their own advertisement. It was strange to see them repeating the same error from a few months back. Anyway, I tried Circuit City. They had one copy left. I go up to the customer service counter with it and School Of Rock. The cashier was reluctant and got a manager. I could not believe the manager knew the difference between the two versions and said it was okay. So I got it for $5.95 plus tax. Not too shabby.

Best Buy was the only place in my city that had the 2 disc version, and amazingly they honored it at $7.50. My Best Buy ALWAYS calls and checks the other store for stock, but this time they didn't (I think it was because it was fairly busy and lines were a few people deep). The girl at the register was a little hesitant because the price difference was big, but gave in easily after seeing the covers matched. Also, she let me keep the ad (so I can try to PM for the Huckabees SE somewhere tomorrow).

Best Picture Winner, nice special edition set, $7.50. Of course I'd recommend it blind. If nothing else, you can turn and sell it "used" on eBay (or somewhere comparable), likely for a profit.
Also, time for a conspiracy theory 101 lecture:
Am I the only one who thinks this is a great trick Target has going on? Run ridiculous prices in your ads for special editions, remove the SE's from your shelves, and laugh as your competitors are forced to price-match. In the words of some Guinness Irishmen: BRILLIANT!
I took advantage of the GBA SE. I'll be heading out right now to pick this one up. Another Best Picture winner that I can cross off of my list.
Edit: Updated - I just got back from price-matching at Best Buy (which, fortunately, is located right next door to Target). Everything went smoothly. I even picked up the S.E. of Tombstone at Target for $15, just as a thank you for the awesome deal. Heh.

I was very, very pleased to get it at my local Best Buy and screw them using their own policy. The checker girl insisted that there MUST be another special edition because theirs was $25, it just can't be the same one. When the first manager said go ahead, she insisted that he make sure so he went and asked another manager. It was approved. The first mgr even said he might get one. Of course...

I have no idea how so many other people had success at BBY with this pricematch. My BBY had 1 West Side Story SE left. After waiting over 10 minutes in line the girl immediately looked at the ad and said "oh, the price is too low, I'll have to call a manager". After several minutes, the manager (another girl) came over and said "you'll have to go to customer service to see if we can do that".
I then waited in that line about 10 minutes and they were about to call up Target when the same girl manager came over and said "that's below our cost so we don't have to pricematch it". I said what is your cost and she said "that's confidential information". I asked the other girl there who was looking it up and the manager shouted to her "don't you dare tell him"! As if me knowing the exact cost was going to be the end of the universe.
I said I thought it was your policy to pricematch legitimate ads, and she said "not if it's below our cost". So I said I guess your pricematch policy is you'll pricematch it when you feel like it. And she says it's a corporate wide policy not to pricematch below cost, so I said thanks for wasting almost 30 minutes of my time (as if she cared) and I left. This is very typical of my average Best Buy pricematching experience. Of course Target and Circuit didn't have any in stock, and my nearest Target said they weren't offering any rainchecks.
I get shot down on pricematches most of the time no matter what. The only times I'm successful is when it's just a few bucks off the normal price. I would very much like to get this manager into some trouble if there is no such policy about not being allowed to pricematch below cost. The fact so many other people got the PM proves that to me -- unless all other people are violating policy. I figure if other BBY stores are willing to do it, then mine should too. The part that made me the most angry is making me wait in line again when she knew she wasn't going to allow it the whole time -- she just did that because she doesn't like me because I've argued with her over past pricematches and the Madden coupon of long ago, and of course she always denies me the pricematch. If I hadn't been in a hurry to get to work I might have asked for her manager just to complain about how she handled it. She is exemplary of the type of manager at stores in my area.

you should have asked her to show you were it says that. In big large letters on a plaque in every Best Buy, there is nothing in their price match policy that states "only if..."

I had a similar experience at my Circuit City trying to price match this. They called up Target to confirm and made me wait over 20 minutes standing in front of their counter. to cut my story short, after the manager agreed that it is the correct item but refused to follow their policy, i went home and wrote a letter and email to circuit city. the next day, a different manager from their store called me and told me to come in and they would honor it.
crafting a nice letter with specific names, times and quotes from people will get you results. (although with Best Buy and their "angel" and "devil" thing, you may not get anywhere)

Manzana, you might try walking out to the parking lot and calling BBY's corporate customer service line. The number has been posted here before, and who knows, it might even be on their website. Assuming they don't give you the same bullshit, then you can try to have them call the store directly with you waiting on the line, and ready to walk back into the store once they've laid down the law to the local peons.
Make sure you have the store's address and "store number" or whatever they use to ID the store before you call, it wouldn't hurt to have the name of the "manager" who refused the pricematch too.

When Target misprinted this same DVD last year, the manager refused to honor it even though they had no disclaimers posted. I called the corporate offices the next day and they agreed that it should have been honored and sent me a $20 GC.
Coincidentally, they told me the disclaimers had been put up 10 minutes after I left.

What a pain in the ass. Here's how it went for me:
First I went to Target and snooped around their closed cash registers until I found a copy of their weekly ad hidden away (for some reason, they don't like to make them readily available). I thumbed through to make sure that page was in there, and sure enough, it was. I walked back to their DVD section, and lo-and-behold, it wasn't in stock. I picked up the Tombstone Vista because it was only $14.99, and went to check out.
After leaving Target, I drove about 100 yards (because I'm far too lazy to walk all the way there...and back) to Best Buy. I parked, walked inside, and grabbed the last WSS S.E. they had in stock. These are almost always dinged up, so I checked to make sure it was in good condition. Lucky me, it was.
Sales ad in hand, I walked to the customer service counter. "Just checking out?" "No, I'm doing a price-match." All customer service people were busy, but there was nobody at the register. The lady asked the cashier, a cute college girl, if she could do price-matches. She said yes, so I made my way over to the checkout counter. She asked where the price-match was to, I said Target.
I handed her the sales ad, and I swear I think she had an orgasm right then and there. "Oh wow you brought the ad!! It takes us forever when we have to call them, it's so much easier when people bring in the ad! Wow." Me: "I come prepared, don't need you doing any more work than you have to." She pulled out their price-match form, looked at the ad and said, "Whoa, $7.50?" I replied, "Yeah, that's what I said. Shame they're out of stock at Target."
She replies, "Ohhh no no no, don't tell me that." I say, "Oh, oops...I mean, they had numerous copies, copies in the candy aisle, copies in they toy department. They were handing out copies at the front door." She says, "Yeah, you just like to shop at Best Buy, riiiiight?" "Yes, of course, you've never done me wrong."
She continues to write up the slip. As she hands it over to me, some manager makes his way over to ask her about the cash in the drawer...something about it recently being swapped out, or some such nonsense. She answered him, then excitedly pointed out to him that I brought in the ad. I swear, I think I made this girl's day. After I'd filled out some information on the price-match sheet, she rang me up, I paid, and I was out the door. Simple as that.
Sucks for those of you who have asshole employees and managers at your Best Buy locations. If the "under cost" thing isn't mentioned on the price-match claims they have posted around the store, I'd raise all sorts of hell until they complied. Just threaten to hit the manager in the head with a large, sharp rock. That'll usually get your point across.

Went to my local Best Buy here in Orange County, took West Side Story SE to Customer Service, along with Daredevil Director's Cut, Heat SE and Get Shorty SE. BB rep looked at the ad and compared to price, took it back to her supervisor/manager I guess and came back and told me they can't be the same, "price difference too big and this is edition with scrapbook" or something. I told her Target ad shows special edition, which this is, so she said "Ok I'll have to call Target".
After 15-20mins on hold with Target, she went back to her supervisor/manager. She came out, went on the phone, hung up the phone a few seconds later and ended up giving me the dvd set for $7.50.

Although the BB.com website claimed this was out of stock, I had to get a couple other things tonight. Much to my delight, there were several copies of WSS: SE. I brought the ad to the servie counter, the guy seemed really confused, kept checking the box. The said he had to call Target to see if it was in stock. Came back in about 5 minutes and said okay. With the 10% difference added in, it was less than $6 out the door. Nice score.
I just wonder what the Target CSR said (maybe they are playing along for us), becuase I was there yesterday and all they had were the non special edition versions.
Thanks a bunch OP!

As I posted earlier, the manager at my BBY flat out refused to pricematch Target even though they had it in stock on the grounds that the corporate policy is not to pricematch items below their cost. Of course the numerous posts by other people who successfully pricematched at BBY disproves that rule. I called my store again to get the name of the manager yesterday who was mean to me, and if I ever get some time I will call up the 888 BEST BUY number to relay this story and verify the policy. The person at customer service today (a supervisor) said that was in fact the policy and if I came in and tried it again I would be denied the pricematch, so I didn't bother. I am going to make them show this to me in writing and at least see if I can cause some trouble for this location. Unfortunately all I can do is point to this thread on the Internet as my source that other BBY stores are happily pricematching which makes me think this is not a corporate policy. Usually such reps dismiss the Internet as totally unreliable while at the same time implying how people in the stores are as reliable and pure as the wind driven snow. I expect if the people at the corporate line force my store to honor the pricematch, they will have already sold their only copy to someone else (probably pricematched).
So I got a raincheck at Target, and the first slip the guy handed me had the cheap West Side Story edition on it. I compared its UPC to what the cheap edition said, and the list few digits were wrong. So I've got a raincheck for each edition, one saying $28.88 and the other saying $9.44, and now I expect that my Target will never get another copy of the Special Edition. I might go to a different location and get a raincheck there just to increase my chances because I was told different stores get different items depending on how popular they are. The Target rep said I'm supposed to call periodically because they don't actually order enough copies for all the rainchecks nor do they take down your name and phone number. It sounds like there could be hundreds of rainchecks competing for a couple copies if any come in in the next 2 months.

My CC didn't have the SE version, and BB is too far of a drive (shown not in stock on the website). Meanwhile, Target gave me a raincheck for the cheap version also. It took them so long to figure out that they don't carry the SE there that they gave me a $3 apology coupon for my time. I would have much rather preferred the DVD.

I went to West Hollywood Best Buy earlier with WSS and The Italian Job. The poor cashier saw the Target ad and immediately said "I can do that one (Italian Job) but not that one (WSS). There's a controversy with that one...someone just came in trying to do that and our manager said we can't." I said "so Best Buy just decides when they want to follow their own price matching policy or not?" She looked so nervous and scared and said "no, it's just that DVD is $25.00 and we can't sell it for $7.50." I felt bad for her and said "so if the manager comes over there's no way I can price match it?" and she said no. I told her no big deal and put the DVDs back. Well, I guess some DVDTalker's beat me to the West Hollywood store...and traumatized the employees. :)

Circuit City was out.
Best Buy #1 had one in stock and the girl rang it up no problem. Flirting & friendly chatter helps.
Best Buy #2 questioned it, and I knew I was sunk. The manager went to the back room & dialed up Target's web site, showing me a printout of the web page saying it was 23.99 and that the newspaper ad was therefore a misprice.

The manager went to the back room & dialed up Target's web site, showing me a printout of the web page saying it was 23.99 and that the newspaper ad was therefore a misprice.
You should explain to him that target.com is actually linked to amazon.com, and therefore has no relation to the price of an item in the Target store.

True, but I'm pretty sure any manager would disregard that unless they were furnished proof. And, still, most would be too stubborn to budge. Most managers don't like getting shown up and will look to some other inferior excuse.

While going to an appointment this morning in an area I rarely visit, I passed near a Target, Circuit City, Walmart, and Best Buy. I think I've been into each one a couple times in the last 6 years. So I decided I'd waste a little time and look for West Side Story SE.
This Target was even worse than my 2 nearby Targets. There were so many empty spaces on the shelves, I was amazed. When I asked if they had some titles (basic things like Fargo and Moonstruck) they had to check a printout because they can't look it up on a computer terminal, and they didn't carry or were out of stock on everything on my list. This store said they've never carried and never would carry West Side Story SE, so I couldn't get a raincheck there. I don't know if the fact I got a raincheck for the SE at a different Target means that that Target might get it or if no Targets will ever carry it in my area.
Circuit City's inventory was even worse than Target's. Then I went to Walmart who had a considerably different set of titles than my nearby Walmart, and they didn't have West Side Story SE, as I expected. The clerks there were no better than I was at finding titles which were scattered in no logical fashion on various shelves.
Then I went to Best Buy saying to myself this'll be the same story as my nearby store. I found 1 West Side Story SE on the shelf, and took it to the cashier expecting to get denied. He amazingly pricematched it without calling anyone or raising a fuss. All he said was "that's a really good price". The only surprising thing was that he wanted my contact info on the pricematch receipt. I asked why and he said "in case there are any problems". I said what problems would there be? Since you've taken away my ad I don't have any proof of the price in case they call me up and tell me they are going to retroactively charge me full price unless I return it unopened. He said don't worry... they won't do that. I probably should've given fake info, but I didn't feel like I was doing anything wrong and I wanted to use my RZ card. If Target had had it in stock, it would've been $7.50 (I had my Target raincheck with me just in case). If he didn't call to check the nearby Target stores, that's not my fault. I've been denied pricematches so many times I can't feel bad about an occasional success. I hope the guy doesn't get in trouble for it, but considering how many people reported success nationwide at BBY on this pricematch, it would appear that either many employees don't know the rules or more than likely my nearby store made their own policy addendum which states that all pricematches are to be denied if below cost. I would guess it's the latter in which case this guy shouldn't get in trouble at all. What is cost on this set anyway? Probably nowhere near $25.
Now that I have it, my Target will probably get the West Side Story SE edition in stock. It would actually be best if they never did and I could use the 75% off raincheck on something else... maybe.
Here's the funniest part of the whole story: I really didn't even care about buying the West Side Story SE that much. I like the movie, but it's a watch-once-in-a-blue-moon title for me, and I already have the older edition. I pursued this mainly because I was mad at my local BBY store for the way they treated me and making me wait around 30 minutes before denying me. If they had called Target immediately and denied me on the grounds none had it in stock - instead of making me wait in line 3 times to talk to different people, I would've accepted it and let it drop.

Are you dense? He was obviously hot for your bod. If you are lucky, you'll do a lot better than just a good deal on a musical. You can probably get at least two free dinner and movies before you have to put out.

Needed to score 2 (one for me, one for mom)
Circuit City was out.
Best Buy #1 had one in stock and the girl rang it up no problem. Flirting & friendly chatter helps.
Best Buy #2 questioned it, and I knew I was sunk. The manager went to the back room & dialed up Target's web site, showing me a printout of the web page saying it was 23.99 and that the newspaper ad was therefore a misprice.
I have one more BB to try.
I actually had 2 more BBs to try.
BB #3 was sold out yesterday when I went at lunchtime.
BB #4, last night.... score! Got the last one.
The pattern to both of my successful attempts vs the one I was denied: always go to the giggley 17 year old girl cashier and do some friendly chat as she rings everything up. When I was denied, it was a guy cashier.

The person running electronics at my Target said he got an e-mail explaining the mix-up, said they didn't have the SE anyway, and doubted they would ever get it. Because of all of that, he could not do the raincheck. Same story at the customer service desk. They gave me a card with the phone number to "Guest Relations." They were very nice about it, but they didn't seem to try to go out of their way for a guy with $85 of merchandise in his basket...
They gave me an ad, and I took it to CC. The woman (well, fat asshole goth teen girl) at the checkout counter said no way to a pricematch. Someone else had tried it before and the DVD in the ad was a single disc. I pointed at the ad and said nope, it's the same as the DVD I have here on the counter. She said try the customer service desk.
I approached the woman (well, cute little blondie with a nice rack teen girl) at customer service, asked for a pricematch, showed the ad, got a prompt "no problem," with a manager even standing right there watching. She rung it up for $5.95. Took that and Get Shorty: SE home and that's that.
Fuck. Shoulda got her number. What a cutie!

I was thinking I could take her out for dinner, then we could snuggle up on my couch to watch WSS. She'd get all teary-eyed during "One Hand, One Heart," and that's when I make my move...

Now that a couple weeks have passed, I called the Target where I got the $7.50 raincheck to check on the status of West Side Story SE DVD. Exactly as I thought, they didn't have any. It turned out to be the manager who told me it was now listed as discontinued and I could come in any time and use the raincheck to get 75% off any DVD up to $28.88.
Does anyone who has done a similar raincheck deal at Target have any advice on how this works? I'm under the impression that I can get only ONE DVD worth up to $28.88 at 75% off rather than 2 DVDs worth $14.44 at 75% off, etc. Therefore, I should try to find the most expensive DVD I can under $28.88. Is there any easy way to do this online?
At Target.com there are about 20 pages of DVDs listed. It kind-of sorts by price, but not correctly. Do those prices reflect in-store or online only prices? Perhaps some people have some recommendations of DVD special editions or sets in the $25 ballpark I should look for? I'd rather go in there knowing what I want to buy than waste an hour looking at the shelves.
Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. I'd expect other people who also got the West Side Story SE raincheck (for the $28.88 edition) should soon be facing the same dilemma of what to use the raincheck on.

Target.com is linked to Amazon.com so those prices aren't the same.
My advice to you is to get something that you want with the raincheck. Target's DVD section isn't that big so you shouldn't have much trouble skimming through the entire thing to find something you want.
Also, you win the anti-D.Pham00 award cuz instead of short one word responses, your posts are always like 4 paragraphs long ;)

I would guess they would let us take $21.66 off a higher-priced set.

Target has a policy that if a dvd has been on the shelf for a long time and hasn't sold that much, they dump it by shipping it back to their warehouse or distributors

Dabaomb, you are a genius! Buy something I want with the raincheck. I would've never thought of that! -smile-
Seriously, though, it sounds like there is no way to view prices and inventory on the average Target store before I go to try to figure out what's near $28.88, so I'm just going to have to go there and stare at the shelves. Oh joy! (Said like McCoy when he was asked to help Scotty build a whale tank.)
I can't help that I'm verbose and other people aren't. At least I'm a fast typist, though maybe everyone else is too.

Target raincheck is usually good for a month or so. Did the manager tell you by when you have to use it?

My raincheck expires 4/4, which was about 6 weeks, but the girl at the customer service desk said they take expired rainchecks.

I have until sometime the first week of April to use my raincheck. I was hoping some new release deluxe set I wanted would appear before then, but I checked my list of wanted DVDs and other than The Incredibles which I have already preordered there is nothing coming out I want until mid-late April. I don't know if I'd dare risk using an expired raincheck unless after staring at the shelves I can't find a single thing I want (entirely possible).
I'll have to use it on something that's already out, and I have absolutely no idea what. I'd love to find a list of DVDs that most Targets sell (and actually have in-stock) in the $20-$28.88 price range.

You do have 90 days to return items purchased from Target (including unopened DVDs) opposed to 30 days at other shops. So if raincheck is about to expire, purchases something for $20-$28 bucks then return it within that time frame for something else within the 90 days.

I'm not sure what good does this do? You use the raincheck to buy something that you don't intend to keep and then return it for a refund of the price that you paid for it in the first place (raincheck price). Then you buy something you want at the price effective on that day. Am I missing something here?

YMMV here, I am not sure what the general Target policy is for rainchecks.
I was able to redeem mine for 75% off any dvd, whereas I had assumed it would have to be of comparable value. Believe me, the temptation was strong to grab a Star Trek season for $25, but I decided not to push my luck and settled for Seinfeld Season 3 for $10.
