Robert De Niro American Express commercial?
Is he selling out by doing this commercial?

My oldest friend
My first love
My east
My far east
My west side
My private side
My heartbreak
My heartbeat
My life happens here
My card is american express
It is not really that bad but I was surprised he would do something like this.
at least he did not do a beer commercial.

I would say that the majority of big stars have done commercials. Not just at the beginning of their career, but in their prime. Many of them, like Harrison Ford or Ahnold or such do these overseas, where they don't play in the US market, to help maintain that aura of whatever that is attached to doing commercials.
Maybe it's selling out, but I could care less. If I had the chance to be paid millions of dollars for a few days of work, I'd jump on it.

i hate when people call an actor a sellout......he's making money, can you blame him?
why not make quick cash off of easy work? it's the people that buy the crap just because some actor or athelete endorses it that should be called sellouts

I'm guessing in general, these guys see a big paycheck and a chance to have a little fun making a psuedo short film. Seems like a good reason to do things like this.

Seeing as Casino came out almost ten years ago, I've been clamouring for another DeNiro/Scorsese collaboration. While I am thankful for my answered prayer, I had hoped it would have been something a little more substantial.

If Gene Hackman can do the voice overs for those dreadful Lowe's commercials, I have no problem with DeNiro hawking the American Express card.
As a poster already pointed out, people like Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Leonardo DiCaprio and others do overseas commercials that we never see in the US.
One of the few good uses of celebs in commericals were those Direct TV ads...John Goodman, Andy Garcia, Danny DeVito and (my personal favorite of the bunch) Robert Duvall.

I heard that there's TONS of money doing these. Like - TONS.
Haven't seen the DeNiro one. The Scorsese one, where's he critiquing the photos, is hilarious. Actually, Scorsese's a funny guy whenever he's doing promo stuff (tv shows etc).
The Direct TV ones are neat. It's like "oh, hey, thats so and so". But they seem a bit too simple. On the other hand, it's cool that they read random customer fan-mail stuff.

What I bet happened here is that Martin Scorcese got DeNiro to sign up for a big collaboration... his next epic. He even went to the work of writing an entire screenplay for the thing. He also signs up some other A-list actors to seal the deal (or so he claims). So they start shooting footage for his "upcoming movie", but only DeNiro is there because the other A-listers won't be shooting their scenes until next week. The American Express stuff was woven into the dialogue in a very discrete manner, and it just happened to be the scenes picked for the 'first day' of shooting.
The next day, Scorcese calls DeNiro up and regretfully tells him the production company has decided to pull funding on the project. It's dead in the water. DeNiro offers to help him find another source of funding, but Scorcese says he's just sick of the whole thing. Cut to a few months later, Scorcese has just punk'd DeNiro by tricking him into filming a commerical.
