Not positive, but I believe that it's the same as the 3-disk set issued (and available) in Canada:

You'd have to find the French 3-disc set used (and Amazon France have a couple available), but the 4-disc Ultimate Edition is still available . As far as I know best sound and picture available (and beautiful packaging), but no English subtitles.

Ahhh one day I will have to learn french to get that 4 dvd edition
but as I love the film so much and know all the words anyway, maybe its worth getting anyway one day.
but until then the 3 dvd Canadian version is super dooper and is very cheap at www.dvdsoon.com

Try this site. It's still avalible and their delivery was good. Compared to amazon, this might be the way to go. It's an excellent version.

Edit: Romero beat me to it. I need to schroll slower....anyway it really is an excellent set. The documetaries really make it worth it. Very in depth.

DVDsoon is one of the slowest retailers ever, if they don't have the title on hand. They don't actually show valid stock info, so you might be in limbo for a month before you even know if you can get what you ordered.

From what I read in previous threads, the French 3-Disc set (an possibly the UE) have the best picture quality. The only issue is it does not carry any english subs.
