Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence this Friday!

Anyone going to see it? It looks absolutely gorgeous. From what I have also read, it's pretty deep and philosophical too, so if you're expecting non-stop action you might be disappointed.

Here's the trailer as well as a clip:

DVD rental for me, it looks visually awesome but boring as snot. The tv series-Stand Alone Complex- on the other hand is awesome.

Hoberman calls it the best anime he's ever seen, but I just skimmed his review. Most critics fail to take anime seriously, especially if it adheres to what they assume are conventional subjects, like the sci-fi of GITS.

While it is true that Oshii has been getting more and more blatantly philosophical, sometimes to the detriment of his films, I think the critics' input about this movie may be fairly unimportant. I agree with Phyre--most critics have a mental checklist they bring with them to the theater when they go watch an animated feature and if the checklist isn't met, they respond with hostility.

It is very difficult to achieve depth in animation and retain the viewer.

I have watched a number of Anime that I felt was slow. The original Ghost In The Shell was one. That doesn't mean it wasn't great.

But something is missing. I think it takes a lot more work for serious animation to make us care about a character. Most of the emotion that is an actors performance is lost. This translates into long stretches of the movie that I just don't get. Usually caused by the purpose, intent or goal of a character being missed.

I will buy this. Guaranteed. But I can understand how the mainstream media and viewer woud find serious Anime dull at times.
