Speaker stand question

Is there any technical reason to use traditional speaker stands? I'm not crazy about how most of them look, and would rather put my front and rear speakers on small side tables that I already have. Assuming the tables are stable and tall enough (which they are), is there any reason I should buy speaker stands from CC or Overstock or IKEA? Any sound quality issues?

Thanks in advance

One reason is height, you want the fronts at your seating listening level and the rears a couple feet higher for surround sound not direct sound. If you can control that with your tables, you're fine.

Maybe.

Good quality speakers stands are designed to be sturdy and rigid and will not vibrate. If you go with tables that are the proper height I would make sure that they are sturdy and you put some felt feet on the speakers to isolate them from the table as much as you can.

Good point. Have have some old metal Celestion stand. They have spikes that screw into the bottom plate so that these small spikes punch thru the carpet and pad to get to the flooring under. Nice and solid (and no, you can't see the holes in the carpet).

The stand are also hollow. So that you can fill them with sand or shot (or combination). And yes, believe it or, it makes a significate difference in sound using them filled or hollow.
