Quick question about the sound of Splinter Cell (PS2 version)

I finally picked up Splinter Cell for the PS2 since it's now nice and cheap. But I'm curious about the sound. The sound effects and all is great but, for a game programed in Pro-Logic II, the surround is very slight. I noticed that in the sound options menu there's a part that says surround on/off that was set to off by the default settings. I though maybe this was just a virtual surround for people who'd be playing this game with just their TV but the instruction manual doesn't even mention the sound options at all. I activated it but feel the surrounds were suddenly too high. So which is it? The very light surround use when this is switched to off or the slightly too loud surrounds when it's set to on? or am I right in assuming that this is virtual surround a'la Ocarina of Time for the N64?
