I want to buy a DVD recorder tomorrow at Best Buy...but I need your help!

Tomorrow I'm headed to Best Buy with my 10% off coupon to buy a DVD recorder. I'm lost with DVD recorders so I'd like some help here. I'm looking to spend $300-$500 and was looking for some recommendations. Some sites with reviews might even help. I'm not even that clear on DVD+R vs. DVD-R...I'd like to transfer many of my VHS tapes to DVD so what would be the best recordable DVDs to get? I might even be interested in one of the DVD/VHS combos. Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Just to clarify - are you looking for a "stand-alone" unit, or one for your computer?

I have 2 Panasonic standalone DVD recorders and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.I have had them since early 2002 and have been very happy with them. They use DVD-R discs.

Thanks for the tip, dvd-4-life. I've had good luck with Panasonic products as well. Thanks again!

I picked up the Philips model that's on sale this week. I also picked up 2 Memorex 10 packs that come with the cases and blank discs. Hope I did well...if I didn't I'm sure I'll hear about it. If I did screw up don't blast me too bad. Thanks once again to those who helped.

Thanks for the brilliant technical reply. Lots of help!

The pannys do -r and -ram, have Hard Drives and if you check over on the AVS Forum, are the DVD Recorder of Choice.

The poster you were responding to had a good reason for saying go with -R/RW or +R/RW over DVD-Ram since the DVD-Ram format is not compatible with the vast majority of stand-alone DVD players as well as computer DVD drives. If the recorder does DVD-Ram and DVD-R that's wouldn't be a problem, but a DVD-Ram only model means you will likely only be able to play the disc in the recorder only.

Don't all the new Panasonic DVD players have DVD-Ram capacity?

Well, while this thread is here, let me ask a question...

I'm interested in getting a standalone DVD Recorder too. What I primarily want it for is to burn copies of things I've recorded on my DirecTV TiVo unit (Sony SAT-T60, Series 1), though I may also want to transfer some video tapes onto DVD also.

I don't think I need a unit with a large HD or fancy playback options like Panasonic's "timeslip", but I do think I want a unit with a HD that's large enough to transfer a couple of hours of video. I'd like to be able to edit out the commercials ahead of time, then hit "go" and let the unit crank out a DVD for me.

Do all DVD Recorders have this capability, some, or none?

Edit: Updated with TiVo unit model, in case it matters
