Will you be buying the "Warner Bros. 'night at the movies'" box set?
... that is to say the box set that includes The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Yankee Doodle Dandy - or will you be buying just one or maybe two of the titles by themselves? I've never seen YDD but I know the other two are must haves. - what are you going to do?

I don't like "arbitrary" box sets - by that I mean, sets that have nothing in common other than the fact that some hotshot studio exec decided it would be a good marketing ploy. It makes perfect sense to have a Bond box set, or Indy Jones, or a collection spotlighting an actor or director, but other than being great movies from the same studio, why should these three be lumped together?

If getting them together is cheaper than buying them seperately - which, with CH, I doubt - then I will.
Gonzo - YDD is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. George Cohan was annoying as hell in real ife, and sure enough, he and his songs are presented that way in the film... still a good flick though. Cagney's on top form.

the 30's and 40's when the studio system was in place.
These movies along with Casablanca, Public Enemy, White Heat, and many others defined the Warner Bros studio at that time. This is hopefully the start of a series of high quality releases by Warner Bros of classic films. Hopefully sales will justify them releasing other older films in their Night at the Movies series. These films are the best or one of the best of films that Flynn, Bogart, and Cagney made for Warners. The box set could have been called the best of classic Warner Bros.
It is interesting that several people have stated that they have not seen or did not like Yankee Doodle Dandy. James Cagney won the Oscar for this picture. It is of its time, a WW II flag waver.
about a WWI flag waver, George M Cohan. It is a great picture.
I don't think anyone will regret purchasing this as a blind item.
The Adventures of Robin Hood and Yankee Doodle Dandy will
be broadcast by Turner Classic Movies on September 29 at 9:00pm and Midnight respectively Eastern Daylight Time . Proceeding each film will be a Making of Documentary which presumably is also included on the DVDs.
Back on topic, I will be buying the box set
Does anyone know when this will be available for preorder?

I read that there's an extra documentary on Warner studios when you buy the boxset - anyone know more? - and apparently it has been shown before on tv. Is it any good and how long is it etc.

I'll be purchasing the box. Yankee Doodle Dandy and The Adventures of Robin Hood are not only great films, but FUN films. I haven't seen Treasure yet, but I don't mind purchasing it with the other two titles since I doubt I'll be let down by a Huston-Bogart film.

Tough call. I am definitely getting Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Am on the fence for Robin Hood, and was leaning against Yankee Doodle Dandy. But I'll see if the box set is any cheaper than getting 3 individually. If it's not much more than the cost of two, I may just get all 3.

I'm a big fan of all three films, and will definitely buy all three. If they're available in a boxed set (at a reduced price), so much the better!
Anybody know what the subsequent Night at the Movies films will be? I know Warner was working on HIGH SIERRA, which seems like a natural for this format. Has anybody heard anything more?

I love all three of these films & with Warner's loaded & creative packaging, the box set is a must-have. DVD Planet has them up for pre-order at 30% off retail:
Warner Legends Collection $48.94
The Adventures of Robin Hood $18.89
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre $18.89
Yankee Doodle Dandy $18.89
So, you would save about $8 by buying the set over the individual releases (plus you get the bonus documentary on a seventh disc).
