What are some essentials of the Midnite Movies from the MGM studio that are must haves?,I'm a horror freak but this is one of the sub-divison label that I don't own much of.
I pretty much own at least one DVD from every major horror label:
(Anchor Bay,Media Blasters (shriek Show),Synapse,Elite,Blue Underground,Something Weird Video), thus Midnite Movies should be my next project to tackle...

I'ved only owned one "Midnite" DVD before and that was
"Killer Klowns from outer space" -but was NOT impressed with that movie at all..thus bye-bye to eBay it went.

I'ved got The Abominable Dr. Phibes on order recently,so any more recommendations would be appreciated....

and for preference -I prefer 70's and 80's stuff over the 50's and 60's,but a bunch of the Midnite stuff are indeed 50's/60's.

but Just give me your meat and potatoes of Midnite Movies ......

It's not a Midnite Movie, but MGM has a great disc for Return of the Living Dead. It's the same price as the midnite movie line, and is a darn cool movie. Although you probably already have it.

Motel Hell is a cool film as well. It is part of the Midnight Movie line, as a double feature with the film Deranged.

You didn't like Killer Klowns?!

My favorite Midnite Movies DVDs (besides Killer Klowns) are:

The Abominable Dr. Phibes
The Fall of the House of Usher (features a great commentary by Roger Corman!)
X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (ditto)
The Pit and the Pendulum (ditto again)

and the double features, especially The Attic/Crawlspace & Deranged/Motel Hell

And since you prefer 70's/80's films, I'd also recommend Theater of Blood.

You prefer stuff from the 80's yet you did not like "Killer Klowns . . . "?, then you will be very hard pressed to find much of anything from the Midnite Movies line that you'd enjoy. The cheese factor is way up thus must be your suspension of disbelief as well. Even when I think of the phrase "midnite movie", I think of cheesy flicks on the local affiliates on late Friday nights I grew up with. Perhaps you would have to have been raised with such movies to appreciate their cheap brilliance.

Killer Klowns is a classic! The only Midniite movie I own so far and have watched it 10+ times... Best B movie ever!

"It was a space ship. And there was these things, these killer clowns, and they shot popcorn at us! We barely got away!"

I love me alot of cheese in my horror films but I just couldn't stand dem clowns!and I know this movie is really well respected in the cult-circuit-but just not for ME. -sorry-

I'm really impressed with MGM's midnite movie line even though many of the movies I haven't seen before. My favorite disc (and I think a highly recommended one in general) is the one that contains Roger Corman's take on Edgar Allen Poe's "Masque of the Red Death". This was a favorite horror flick of mine since childhood, very creepy, gothic, atmospheric. I haven't yet seen the movie on the flip side though: Premature Burial.

I'll add another recommendation for the Vincent Price/Roger Corman Poe adaptations. House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death and The Pit and the Pendulum are all good. I haven't gotten around to watching The Premature Burial yet, but it's definitely on my "to watch" list.

F For Fake

Another BIG thumbs up for all of the Vincent Price titles. I LOOOVE Midnite Movies. The transfers are usually top notch, and sometimes there are nice extras. But the best part is the simple fact that MGM is making these movies available AT ALL, and at such a nice price!!!

And for that reason alone, I highly recommend any of the Double Features. Two horror flicks with nice transfers for $9 just can't be beat.

You can't go wrong with any Vincent Price film. I'd recommend starting with The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971), Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) and Theatre of Blood (1973).

I also highly recommend X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963).
