Sorry for being behind the curve in just having seen this, but the film was stunning. Any movie set in Paris has an immediate advantage, and the themes and acting and photography are superlative. For me it was a totally fresh experience in cinema, I've never seen anything like it.

Plant!!!

;)

That's probably why so many people consider it to be one of the greatest films ever made. I found it very interesting at times, but I was fairly bored with it by the end. It's still in my collection, and I'll watch it again sometime, but frankly I found it very overrated.

Marlon Brando's acting is what makes the movie.

tried watching it on video a number years back, I just fastforwarded to the 'butter' sodomy scene and then clicked it off.

It's a good guy mid-life crisis movie; as good as "American Beauty". But Bertolucci is a very good, underrated filmmaker anyway. Jean-Pierre Leaud and Maria Schneider were very good in it, also.

You know, even though Paris is the setting, because of the performance of Brando I never thought of Paris once while watching the film.

I was too transfixed in the love/hate relationship of the two main characters...

Brando really out did himself with this film. IMO, this is his greatest performance (not The Godfather, On the Waterfront, or even A Streetcar Named Desire).

You need to go and watch the whole thing now!

Almost every man (and some women) that I ask about this scene say that it was sexually arousing...and it is.

But others say it is a rape scene and I say the fact is that she likes it and wants it, but she is to be married to another man and she thinks it might be wrong.

After seeing Last Tango years ago, I realized that
Marlon Brando just might be the greatest actor
ever. The guy is just plain amazing.

Just saw this myself the other day finally; I'd long meant to but Brando's recent death stirred me to finally check it out. Still working out how I felt about it; Brando is superb, and I really think this is his best work of all, an intense and honest and emotional piece of work. The movie itself though felt a little flawed and slow; I absolutely HATED Tom (Jeanne's fiancee) and every time his character came on screen the movie turned into junk for me. He came across shallow, obnoxious and brainless to me; I know that was to contrast with Paul's soulfulness but somehow it just felt a bit overdone. Still a fine movie and one I'm glad I saw. Like a lot of those classic 1970s flicks I've seen I suspect I'll find myself thinking of it a lot in coming days and grow to appreciate it even more with time...

Yeah, it's a pretty amazing film. Possibly career peaks for both Bertolucci and Brando.

I liked her better on the Simple Life.

Idiot question, why was this rated NC-17? I read quickly down to the bottom so there would be no spoilers for my self. yeah, there's some sex and nudity, but is any of it really explicit and or graphic?

It's probably because Brando takes Schneider by force. Also because she wants it. That's pretty heavy-duty material.

I am another person who thought the movie was pretentious and boring. The dialogue was awful, and it didn't matter if Brando played it well. Moose Turd Pie baked by the best pastry chef in France is still Moose Turd Pie.

Oh, I'd definitely say it's still NC-17. Sodomy, butter sodomy, full frontal nudity -- it'd probably still be rated that today.
