R2 "Tess"

Does anyone own this R2 dvd? If so, how is the quality & where did you buy it? I've loved this Polanski film for many years. I'd like to retire my P&S Laser version.

"R2" is an ambiguous term... Do you mean the Scandinavian release? Or the Japanese release? Or some other R2 release?

I have the Scandinavian release. It's in the right aspect ratio but that's the only good thing. It has really extreme overuse of edge enhancement, and awful MPEG encoding artifacts. The disc is cheap, and it really, really shows. But at least it's not pan and scan.

The only place that I've managed to find that sells it is DVDoo.dk. If you know of a Japanese source please let me know.

Sure thing - here's a link to the Japanese release of Tess at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005G0NZ/

It's actually a bit cheaper than most Japanese dvd's, although that's not saying much.

There's a (brief) review at the bottom of this page:

I forgot to check HMV Japan, who have an English-language version of their site. Yes, it seems to be available there too. (I've never ordered from them, so I can't tell you how reliable they are.)

Go to this page, click "English" at the bottom, then load this page again:

I found this US e-tailer which is selling it: www.laserexchange.com/. The running time listed is 164 minutes. This seems a little short to me.

...too short by some 16 minutes according to HALLIWELL's, which lists the movie at 180 minutes...

. . . . . .
