Why are prices up on ebay this year ??

Hi!

Ever since about six weeks ago, closing prices on ebay have been significantly higher than they were last year on the same items. (I'm referring to more than just DVDs, which have always sold for absurdly high prices on ebay.)

Anyone have a theory as to why ??

I would say that there are simply more people on-line. More people means more competition in bidding. It also means more uninformed people bidding. But, you would think that would also mean more items being offered. Personally, I haven't e-Bayed in a great long time because I thought that items went for too much in the first place.

It could also be like the stock market a few years ago in the "dot-com" boom. Meaning that the greater number of people being involved creates an artificially heightened demand for products that may not be in short supply. Over-hyped advertising by auction "professionals" can lead the aforementioned uninformed user to a false sense of "urgency." Look at the discrepancies in the high end and low end prices sometime.

Well the trend toward outrageously high prices for DVD's on eBay has certainly not subsided.
I still continue to be amazed by what some common and in many cases PV movies are going for.

A couple of years ago I picked up about a dozen DVDs for less than $10 each over the course of a week or so. I would basically see which DVD auctions were ending in the next few minutes and bid on those I wanted, not bidding more than $10 for anything.

That would be impossible today as yokles bid over MSRP for DVDs (and almost everything else). I think that Abo is right. There are just more people using eBay now.

Similar thing happened to me recently.
I had bought Frank Herbert's Dune (2000) for 14.39 from deepdiscount.
Watched it once, hated it, put it up for auction.
It went for over 20 + shipping and this for a PV disc.

I've given up trying to figure out "Who are these people?"
