If you have the scratch for a PS2 my honest reccomendation would be a GameCube and a DVD player it will cost about the same. If you have to have a PS2 then buy it first, it will play DVD a bit of a pain in the ass, but then you only have to save 150 or less for a seperate DVD player later.

Definitely go for the DVD Player...

The PS2 plays DVDs very poorly, and should be used as a second, or even third DVD player, never a primary player...

The PS2 does NOT play DVDs poorly! (I'm not sure how that myth got started.) There's no question that it's more convenient to use a regular DVD player to watch DVDs, but I've played dozens of DVDs on my PS2 with no problems and it's still my primary player. If you go this route, I highly suggest purchasing the Sony DVD Remote, which contains updated drivers and has a more functional remote.
