Gamecube is easy to mod.
A couple of my friends bought import Gamecubes and they are already getting them modified so they can play the US games.
Basically it's just like the Saturn and all you need is to solder on a toggle switch. A guy is doing it at a local game store, but he says anyone with basic soldering experience can do it. I put a mod chip in my Dreamcast myself and he said it's much easier than that.
This sounds like a nice option for anyone that wants to pick up games from Japan.

I modded my Japanese system last week, and the solder points are pretty tight.
Disassembling was easy, except for ripping the heatsink off the processor. (it removes more easily if you try to rotate the heatsink) The heatsink screws back into place afterwards, so you don't have to be too careful when removing.
Soldering the switch onto R6 was a pain. The connection points are very small and close together. I think you need to be fairly good at soldering to attach the switch.
