Dump those copies on ebay before this gets out.

http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q2-2001/061201b.html

One of Square's finest offerings for the PlayStation, Final Fantasy Tactics has long been very scarce as a result of the game's North American discontinuation. Fortunately, after years of being forced to scavenge eBay, tactical RPG fans who missed out on this classic will be able to pick up a copy in stores, as the game has been added to Sony's Greatest Hits lineup.

This news comes as a definite relief to all the RPGamers who were forced to pay exorbitant prices for the game online. The Greatest Hits lineup tends to carry a lower price tag, and since Sony has retained the publication rights they originally owned for the game, the price should be very decent.

I didn't like FF8 and haven't bothered with ff9. But the tactics is pretty good so was FF7. I think Square losts its edge.

Now what about the equally elusive strategy guide for it?

I picked mine up for $16.99 used quite awhile back. At the time not many people seamed to want it. In the last year though its been one of the most sought after titles. Strange how something is not popular when its released, but after its gone everyone wants it. Its not quite as good as Sega's Shining Force series, but its still a pretty solid title.

I agree with FF8, but FF9 is great.

If you can get a good deal on it, I suggest picking it up.

It and Chrono Cross are my 2 best games on the PS.

I generally only play RPG games.

This is a great game, I recommend it to any RPG fan. I bought mine for only $7 after shipping on half.com last year.

Again, has ANYONE seen this confirmed elsewhere? As I posted yesterday when I asked, NO sstores have heard about this, and no other websites have picked up on it. At the moment it is looking like one site's wet dream.

Thanks for the reply GJKowal. So far though, neither of the local EBs, Babbages, or Funcolands (yes, I have 2 of each within 15 minutes of my house) have received any word about this, and it is not on their web sites either. That is why I was asking.

Two things:

1) This is why I kept asking if it was confirmed anywhere, which it never was.

2) It may still be happening because Gamestop (Funcoland/Babbages) just lowered their prices for a used copy from $64.99 to $19.99, which seems to support it will be coming out in a re-release.

Release Date Set: 7/31

From the GIA:

http://www.thegia.com/news/0107/n19a.html

"Despite reports from a handful of sites denying our earlier story, Final Fantasy Tactics is indeed headed for Sony's Greatest Hits line of games and now has a firm release date and price. Videogame retailer GameStop has verified that the Greatest Hits version to this PlayStation classic should reach store shelves on July 31st for a meager price of $24.99.

In addition, a rerelease of Prima's Official Strategy Guide to Final Fantasy Tactics will be available."

Also, I saw that Xenogears is currently available from EBgames.com for $40.

Well, the disks are out, but they are defective!!

http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2001/080101a.html

According to various reports, the Greatest Hits copies of Final Fantasy Tactics, released less than two days ago, are defective. Although the cause of the defect is not known, according to a Babbages employee, the discs will not work with either original PlayStations, PSones, or PS2s, giving an "insert PlayStation disc" error instead of an amazing tactical RPG experience.

This news is unfortunate considering the immense enthusiasm surrounding the game's re-release. Although the problem appears to have affected the entire first wave of discs, no statement on reasons for the defect or the arrival of a fixed shipment has been made by either Square or Sony.

RPGamer will keep readers aware of any updates to this information. Thanks to Sam for our first heads up on the sad news.

Update: RPGamer has learned that the faulty Final Fantasy Tactics disc will work on the bleem! emulator for the PC. Thanks to Craig Cearlock for the info.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhahahahahahaha, haaaaa hahaha, hahhahahaha.

Ha.

The irony drips oh so sweetly. Seriously, though - how does a company the size of Sony release a game with every disc bad? Do they think QA means they say, "Quiet, A$$hole!" whenever someone points out it doesn't work?

All discs have been recalled, and the word is that they'll be out (again) towards the later part of this month after they replace the defective discs.

There is a way to play this game. You need to either have a PSX modified to play Japanese games, or a Japanese boot disc (I have the PSX-change V. 2). Boot it up like you are going to play an import, and then pop in Final Fantasy Tactics, it loads right up. Apparently what Sony did was release the game with the WRONG territorial lock-out on it.
