A good place to pose any questions or problems you're running into would be in this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1124287
The members there are very helpful with this player. (Someone there will have an older firmware version if you need it.)

"The BDP-83 will support DVD Region 1 and Blu-ray Region A only. The Blu-ray Disc Association does not allow OPPO to support any region unlocking capabilities, even for DVD-Video playback.
As Blu-ray is a relatively new platform, OPPO wants to make sure they can sell Blu-ray players for many more years to come. They do not want to implement or excise any content control which could jeopardize their standing with the Blu-ray Disc Association.
These restrictions are non-negotiable. Do not discuss them in the forums."

I just got my player hooked up late last night, so I have not installed the hack myself yet.

I'd be careful posing f/w hack questions on that thread:

The Blu-ray region is switched by entering a 4 digit code on the setup menu.
Press setup on remote once so the menu appears, then hit:
7891 : Region A and codefree DVD
7892 : Region B and codefree DVD
7893 : Region C and codefree DVD
Press setup on remote once so the menu appears, then hit:
7891 : Region A and codefree DVD
7892 : Region B and codefree DVD
7893 : Region C and codefree DVD
And, yes, you'll need to switch back and forth between the codes for the different Blu-ray zones to work correctly, but after that first code input you're good to go for any DVDs from any region.
Let me know if you need any more help. I've got all the firmware updates and hacks stored on my computer.

I have the 601 firmware. PM your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.
I haven't tried the 601 hack over the latest 620 firmware or 722 beta because everything is working fine as it is with the older firmware. When I have more time on my hands (sorry, but I'll really pressed for time lately), I'll do some experimenting and tell you what I find out.

Sorry. I never even noticed that I received a private message from you. (I log into DVDTalk everyday, but unlike other sites a screen doesn't pop up to them me I have private messages.)

Yeah just ordered one myself. been using an Oppo for DVD as a separate machine and a BD30 for Blu-ray. Going to consolidate and just use the BDP-83 for everything (except HD DVD of course - still have the XA2).
Was going to get the Momitsu for $250, but then I'd be spending that amount for a player I'd only be using for region B stuff. So for another $250 I get what is certainly a better player than both by current oppo DVD and my BD30, and I can use it for region B when needed.

Just a nice player all around. Great video quality, fast loads, nice menu. Wish I would have bought it sooner.

Re: Anyone Have an OPPO BDP-83 Yet?
Hello, I am using the Oppo BDP83SE together with the Onkyo 605 AV Amp. i would like to know how I can get the best out of this player in terms of audio/ video playback when connected to the Onkyo. In short, I would like the Oppo to handle all the audio and video processing when I am playing music CDs, SACDs, DVD-As, DVDs and Blu Ray discs.
for SACDs, DVD-As, DVDs and Blu Ray discs, i am using the HDMI connection.
for music CDs, I am using the stereo analog output from the Oppo to the Onkyo.
are there any settings i should be aware of on the Oppo or the Onkyo to ensure I am letting the Oppo do all the audio and video processing?
any help/ advice that you can give will be most appreciated

If memory serves, the whole point of the SE model was a super high quality analog audio section. Therefore you want to hook up to your receiver via analog (if it has analog ins) wherever possible. You already have that for CD, but you should also hook up the 7.1 analogs if your receiver has inputs. If not, you are really only getting the "SE" advantage on CDs (unless there's more to the SE than that).
If you do not have 7.1 analog inputs, then you are probably hooked up as good as you can get with the HDMI. If you want the Oppo to do all the decoding, make sure you do not set it to bitstream. Bitstream means the receiver would decode.
