"Red Dwarf X" Is Finished Filming, Will Be Release This Fall
I don't know if there are any Dwarfers on this board, nor do I know if this is another thread (I did a search first).
The News: a full new season (six episodes) of "Red Dwarf" has just completed filming and will be released this Fall. From the Official RD Fan Site
Here's the official fan site on YouTube:

I've been a fan for 20 years (the first episode I saw was "Meltdown" on PBS back in 1992). I found the first 5 seasons (or "series") to be solid platinum as sci fi comedies go. After that, it was hit or miss (especially the God awful 7th season and even more horrible "Back to Earth"). But, a TV show that has given me a boatload of laughs that could even rival "The Simpsons"--and speaking for myself, I'm willing to give this new season the benefit of the doubt. As crappy as "Red Dwarf: Back to Earth" was it did show that after even a decade of no new Dwarf; the principle players reprised their roles as if "Red Dwarf VIII" had just wrapped up filming.

I own Red Dwarf I - VIII on DVD, and have been meaning to watch them for years now. If this is Red Dwarf X, what is/was Red Dwarf IX?

It's being referred to as "Red Dwarf X". Will it take before or after the events of "Back to Earth"? I don't know.
One of my fondest wishes for "Red Dwarf" is for Doug Naylor to get Bob Grant to team up with him again. When they were known as "Grant Naylor"--their output was amazing!

I never watched them until about 2002 or so. The first 3 series were great. After that I just remember it getting wierder and less funny with each series. Back to Earth was just painful

^^
I grant you that Red Dwarf VI, VII, VIII, and Back to Earth were a major mixed bag.
But, please give seasons IV and V a re-look--great stuff.

I enjoyed IV and V. The show definitely wasn't bad at that point, but I don't think they were up to par with the previous series.

First episode airs today, huh? Will it be played on BBC America?
Just found out: no.
However, here are the names of the six episodes:
1. Trojan
2. Fathers and Suns
3. Lemons
4. Entanglement
5. Dear Dave
6. The Beginning
Apparently these will be released on DVD and Blu ray before Christmas in UK, I'm not certain whether it will be simultaneous with the US.

I was able to see the first episode, "Trojan" this morning. I'm a little ambivalent. It's *way* better than "Back to Earth"--that's for damn sure. However, compared to the first five seasons (which was 20 years ago) the writing isn't near as witty, and the comedy rhythms are sloppy. I hope things will pick up in the weeks ahead.
On the plus side: the cast reprise their roles like no time has passed. And as US Pilot of Red Dwarf proved, *no one* could play the roles better.

Well, Red Dwarf X wrapped up yesterday in the U.K. I was able to catch all 6 episodes, because, well...this is the internet age.
The first two episodes ("Trojan" and "Fathers & Suns") were the best of the lot.
"Lemons" takes a harmless page from Life of Brian.
"Entangled" was o.k., though deeply convoluted. While convoluted storylines are a given on Red Dwarf, this one felt really forced.
"Dear Dave" was a ship-bound piece that was a little too draggy.
Then we come to "The Beginning". Like season 6's "Out of Time" and season 8's "Only the Good...", it's up to Rimmer to save the day again. It's not a very satisfying way to wrap up this rather claustrophobic season. However, there is a nifty meta-joke about the non-conclusion to Red Dwarf VIII. Will be the last episode? I certainly hope not. These almost 25 year old characters need a better wrap up than this.
Red Dwarf will be available on DVD and Blu ray on January 8th of next year. I'll be getting a copy so I won't feel like I've stiffed the creative team that has brought me so many laughs for the last 20 years.
