Hello Everybody;
After reading the thread about Atari 2600 games, it brought back a painful memory for me.... Is there an end to River Raid? I tried and tried but there were always more bridges to blow up and move to the next level. Thanks. |
I don't think it even had an ending as there wasn't any "goal" to the game. Like so many other games of the time--Asteroids, Space Invaders, Missile Command, Demon Attack, Pac-Man, etc., you just played and played and played until you lost all your guys or quit due to boredom!

Actually, Pac-Man did have an "end" of sorts. The game glitched after level 255 if I remember right, and ended the game there. So, there was a highest level possible, and a highest score possible, which was finally achieved by some guy a year or so ago. Had to eat every peice of fruit, every ghost, and not die through all 255 levels.

Yeah, most games back then didn't have any real concept of an ending -- you just tried to get a higher score than your friends.
However, many did have a "highest score possible", just because of technical limitations or software problems (ie, not knowing what to do when the level number went above a certain number of bytes -- 256 in the Pac Man case). A lot of games, the score just looped back around to zero at some point. |
