Before I found out the system was "dead" I would burn games and then if I liked them, test them out then buy them if I liked them enough to buy them. Sort of like a free trial. However, now that I know they won't be making any more systems and will stop making games within the next 18 months I don't care. I feel there's no use in buying games to support a system that's dead. I'm going to build up a massive library of burned games.

So what do you guys think? Is it bad to burn games for a system that's considered "dead"? Will you be burning games to build up a library of DC games?

Gallant Pig 02-25-01 10:49 PM

Just wondering, but how many games did you actually end up buying (not counting games you bought before you started burning)?

THX 1138 02-25-01 10:51 PM

How the hell do I burn DC games?

2 - Power Stone 1 and 2. I threw out a whole bunch too - Sega GT, Ferarri, 18 Wheel Trucker among others. No point in keeping a burned game I'm not going to play.

Be honest, did you really destroy a blank CD you paid for?

I am! I buy them in large numbers and they only cost me $1 per CD so why not? When you rent a game it costs $5 (in Canada) and you only keep it for a few days. Why's it hard to believe I'd throw out a $1 CD for a game I don't like? You make it sound like I set fire to or break every CD I burn and don't like in half. All I do is toss it in the garbage, it ain't a big deal. :)

Hell yeah I love burning games. If a game is seriously worth $40-50 I'll buy it, but there's not many out there. Most games have gameplay that turns boring within a few hours of playing.

But now that you know the system is dead and supporting it by buying games won't help, would you still pay for a game if you really liked it?

Hell no, my standards are way too high for me to ever pay for a game. ;) ;)

cartman 02-26-01 02:39 AM

I'm all for it as long as you are willing to pay for a game you feel deserves it. Lord knows burning has saved me from buying such greats as "Evil Dead" and "Giga Wing 2" (waaaaay too short). It has, though, driven me to buy Virtua Tennis, Vanishing Point, Street Fighter III, Capcom Vs SNK, etc etc.

Yes, it is technically illegal, but just like Napster, I feel that it will open up consumers to things they would never have thought they'd like.

TKOThomas 02-26-01 05:14 AM

Know what I think about burning games? Bam! Knockdown #1. Bam! Knockdown #2. Bam! Knockdown #3. It's a TKO! TKO Thomas.

tha_dvd_man 02-26-01 03:48 PM

Burning a Dreamcast game is just as bad and illegal as burning a PSX/PS2 game. Whether or not the system is "dead" (and technically it's not....LOTS of games are still coming out and there are still Dreamcasts to be sold) Sega still makes money off of the games, and burning one would be just like swiping one off the shelf. It's not like SNES games where Nintendo doesn't profit from them anymore, thus I have absolutely no problems with d/ling a rom.

darkside 02-26-01 04:01 PM

I know burning your own Smashpack was a big deal for awhile. The only system I ever traded CD-Rs to people with was the 3DO and that was years after it died. If the system is truly dead and there is no new software coming out I don't see that its such a bad deal. I always think back to the people who were unable to get games like Lucienne's Quest for the 3DO or Panzer Dragoon Saga and House of the Dead for the Saturn. There were only a few thousand copies made of these games and its kind of unfair that people who wanted to get it were left out or are expected to pay $100+ on ebay for a copy. Piracy in this situation doesn't bother me. True game collectors like myself want the complete original game anyway, so CD-Rs of old games doesn't really hurt the value of the originals.

darkside 02-26-01 04:08 PM

One other note about piracy. Don't you think that the game publishers are partly to blame for this problem? Look at all the crappy software that is released every year. 75% of the playstation games should probably have never made it out of the development stage. Yet companies like 989 studios and Acclaim release this crap with a big media blitz and people go out and buy it only to be sadly disapointed when they take it home and play it.

Many stores won't take the games back, so you end up being stuck with a crappy $40-$50 game that you can maybe get $10 for by trading it in. I know a few people that started buying the cheap $2-$5 CD-Rs on the internet for this reason. They were tired of getting burned by bad games.

However, I still don't agree with piracy on an active system. It just increases prices for those of us that do buy our games legally. I would like to see game publishers held responsible for the software they release though. Companies like Acclaim, Midway, 989 Studios, etc have gotten away with cheating customers for way too long.

I agree, when there's a game that is extremely rare (due to the company's fault, such as them making only a few thousand copies of PDS) and when the game is extremely expensive because of, well, the greed of the owners, then I think it's okay and it won't hurt the company who made it. But still, even when a system isn't selling any more units and there are only a trickle of games coming out, pirating games for that system still hurts the company. Hell, the Neo Geo is "dead" pretty much, but NG emulation, as opposed to actually buying the system, still hurts SNK (although I admit to using NG emulation...there's no way in hell I'd ever get a Neo Geo).

When you buy a bad game, that's your fault. Read a review, rent it, borrow it, whatever....but pirating a game because it sucks and you can't sell it back is no excuse. However, pirate all the AckLame games you want....to hell with them.:D

Anyone notice TKOThomas's memeber id thing is banned. That's pretty cool. As far as burned games, I choose not to get into this discussion, but people who know me know the answer to this.

Ah, you have a few more than I do :P. No sense in getting those weird japanese games I don't understand how to play.

Spicollidriver1 02-27-01 12:27 PM

A lot fo the Japanese games are easy to play. Although I have a few like Rent A Hero that are impossible to play without a walkthrough

Michael T Hudson 02-27-01 12:38 PM

I will cast no stones but it is funny to me people that have no problem burning music but games are off limit. To me to copy is to copy should not matter what it is. :)

gcribbs 02-27-01 07:20 PM

I do not like the concept of burning games. I do not think it is an issue if you use this to try out a game. The problem is that how do you really control this. I guess people have to decide what there own limits are then live within them.

I have a few MP3's that a friend downloaded for me. I owned almost all of them on cd already. I just had no interest in converting them to mp3's myself (lazy huh :) ).one group that i did not own i have since bought their cd because i really liked the music and feel they should get something for that.

jeffdsmith 02-27-01 07:30 PM

Is it okay to burn games for a dead sytem?

Or maybe the system is partially dead because people were burning the games...
