Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (12/7/23; PS5, Xbox Series S|X, PC)
I feel like there hasn't been much hype in advance of Ubisoft's Far Cry-but-Avatar FPS game that comes out in a little over a month, but previews went up today, including this all-time great excerpt:
A few minutes into my Frontiers of Pandora demo session, a viperwolf interrupts my exploration of the overgrown ruins of an RDA colonial outpost. I kill it with an arrow as it snarls at me. I approach and press the harvest button, watching with confusion as my na'vi character kneels, offering a prolonged prayer of thanks to this fellow child of Eywa—the collective lifeforce of Pandora. As I'm mashing buttons, the rest of the viperwolf pack closes in. The nearest predator pounces.
I'm jarred out of my prayer animation and have to fumble off another arrow as the game's clumsy attempt at a somber moment evaporates. When I swap weapons the scene turns into outright parody: The big, blue hands that were just raised in reverence for the cycle of life now pull out a military-issue assault rifle and punctuate the absurdity by spraying rounds into the terrified pack of animals. My second kill is too damaged by gunfire to harvest. My na'vi, conspicuously, doesn't pray for that one.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora promises a firsthand Avatar experience delivered with a kind of breathless awe. After three hours, that promise already feels thin. Instead of awe, Frontiers of Pandora captures the feeling of someone tugging your sleeve to say, "Look, it's like in Avatar!" And then you feel guilty because they're watching to see whether you're excited, so you say, "Oh. Yeah, cool," before turning your attention back to all the Far Cry stuff that's happening.
If you're wondering just how Far Cry it is: It's pretty Far Cry.

I knew when tbe announcing the game it sounded like a new Far Cry. That's all I need to know. Definitely going on my buy list when it goes on sale

Yeah, I thought it was pretty well known it was going to Far Cry: Pandora, and I'm down for it. I haven't played a Far Cry since 5, so I'm due for some Far Cry action.

Any more buzz on this? It comes out in less than a week and I haven’t heard squat. I’m hoping it gets good reviews, but I wasn’t highly impressed by trailer. I’m looking forward to 3 upcoming games. This, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crownand Final Fantasy: Rebirth..

I have it pre-ordered from Best Buy for PS5. They are offering a 10 dollar digital gift card. I figure if it arrives and gets shit reviews that I can just take it back.

I'm still sitting on Pikmin 4 and Mario Wonder so I'm in no rush. Also, this being an Ubisoft game means it'll be half off in a few months.

There's a forced day one patch but after that the game can be played entirely offline (unless you want to play co-op online). Not bad.

If it's Far Cry : Pandora, I would imagine it's at least somewhat good. I am likely to wait for a sale though.

Ditto. I briefly had it on my Christmas list, but by the time I winnow my backlog enough to play it, Avatar will be at least half-price and heavily patched/updated, so I might as well wait a few months. Or heck, a few weeks.

solid 74 on PC. many liked it, many didn't, but all say beautiful to look at, but a little repetitive and nothing in gameplay that really invents the wheel. IGN gives it 7. Gamespot 80, i believe...

Sounds like it's a standard Ubisoft open world game. For better or worse, depending on your preferences.

I watched the first movie for the 3D novelty and had no interest in the sequel. But this actually looks really cool. Avatar was better off being a video game from the beginning.

I’m going try it out when I’m working from home tomorrow
But, it’ll be tough to give it up while I’m newly entranced with The Last of Us Part I.
