The short answer is that game/software development is complicated, and sussing out which bugs they can and cannot fix can be an entirely bureaucratic mess at the best of times.
Not only that, but developers and testers don’t always come across the same issues that the general public does. It can all sound like excuses, but honestly, I work alongside a TINY team of software devs, we have dozens of open bug reports, and those are only the bugs we know about. Some don’t even show up until the users get their hands on it and do something nobody was expecting or I’ll report an issue that I can reproduce every single time, yet the other uses and devs can’t make it happen at all.

One of the Digital Foundry guys pointed out that he enjoyed Redfall (and Cyberpunk for that matter) and didn’t come across nearly any of the issues the general public saw, but that’s because reviewers also have to evaluate the game (mostly) in isolation. They can’t really discuss issues with other reviewers in advance in fear of somehow violating the embargos/NDAs. So some, just by nature of how they play, find way more problems than others. But nobody talks about the 85/100 that a site like Dual Shockers gave the game initially… they only talk about the low scores, because those reviewers happened to find more problems.

Losing 70% of your team, if that’s actually what happened in the case of Redfall, makes everything that much harder to find, replicate, and fix.

As I said, I liked the game. I had some issues, but no deal breakers. Folks should check it out. But based on this Bloomberg story… it’s kind of a surprise the game wasn’t canned entirely, as some devs had hoped it would be.

to be fair, Cyberpunk is now infinitely better, in terms of performance, than it was on release day. They clearly put in the effort to make that game as good as possible, despite the train wreck that it was at first.

Some think Arkane Austin has completely abandoned Redfall. I think, more likely, they’re silently working to fix as much as they reasonably can, kind of like what happened with No Man’s Sky.

But they’re not going to do that forever. It’s a commercial and critical dud in a different way, and as a studio, they’re better off focusing on a new SP game again, assuming their loss of staff doesn’t make that impossible. Who knows what MS will do with the remaining team.

It has gotten better, for sure. But that was an independent developer. If CDPR was owned by Activision or another conglomerate, I doubt it would have seen many fixes post launch. Which is probably what will happen with Redfall. It's too bad. The idea of exploring a Steven King-like Maine town is super appealing.

Re: REDFALL: Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows - May 2, 2023

You still can it’s not like the game has been delisted.

Anyway, one more point…

the Bloomberg article mentions that ZeniMax was chasing MP games as part of their plans for finding a buyer. The games that came out of that effort were games traditionally made by single-player teams:
Redfall - panned at launch
Fallout 76 - panned at launch
Wolfenstein: Youngblood - panned at launch
And that’s just ZeniMax games that started early on. Surely there are dozens of examples across all platforms.

hear me out, but it’s almost like… chasing MP-centric GaaS for all but the kind of teams that have found gold by perfecting those experiences… is maybe a losing strategy.

It sure would be a shame if the upcoming MS showcase was primarily focused on more GaaS, MP, and/or extraction shooters…

I don't have an XBOX or Gamepass. And I'm sure as hell not paying full price just to walk around the game environment.

Of course it's a completely different financial calculation when you're not expecting to actually sell many copies. Having a new game present at launch on Game Pass for members to play right away was a bigger priority than a game like Cyberpunk which had a bunch of pre-orders getting shipped to stores. I wasn't even sure if Redfall had a physical release. I checked on Amazon and it did, but didn't sell many copies at all.

I think if they had cancelled the game it would have upset people since GP members had assumed they were getting the game for "free" at launch. MS didn't promise them the greatest game ever, but they did kind of promise them the game with their subscription. Cancelling the project late would almost be like taking a game away from subscribers.

Never knew (or forgot) that Youngblood was panned at launch. Checking Metacritic, it's at 65. It always struck me as a perfectly adequate co-op shooter. Nothing special, but certainly not a disaster.

      • For fast paced multiplayer FPS fans – Check out Medium, High, or Linear Input Response Presets as they tend to feel faster and more responsive overall.
      • For slower single player FPS fans – Check out Default, Low, or Medium Input Response Presets as the slower response curves tend to feel like you have a little more precision over your aim.
    • Increasing/decreasing your Controller Sensitivity from the Input Response Presets default value will directly increase/decrease your overall left/right turning speeds.
    • For players who turn up their Controller Sensitivity, consider trying out Default/Strong/Very Strong Aim Assist Strength and ADS Snap Strength if you would like that assistance.
    • For players who turn down their Controller Sensitivity, try Very Weak/Weak/Default Aim Assist Strength and ADS Snap Strength presets to prevent it from feeling like you are fighting for control over your aim.
    • Tinkering with the Input Response Preset setting is a great first step to help you find the controller settings that work best for you.
  • During the Settling In mission, Anna Creelman will now fill the player’s pistol, shotgun, and assault rifle ammunition.
  • Added new Vampire Nest spawns to Old Town and Sedgewick neighborhoods.

Re: REDFALL: Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows - May 2, 2023

Happy Birthday, Redfall!

apparently the DLC is still coming as there have been steam db updates for months, just not yet released. I guess they’re obligated to follow through unless there was some option to refund buyers of the DLC, which seems unlikely. The previous patches did make the game better, but it’s obviously a dud. I enjoyed it for what was there, at least, and enjoyed the very Arkane style to it all, as a fan of their other games.

I just hope Arkane Austin continues to make games, as this game really shouldn’t be their last.

Well, fuck. In addition to the news that Arkane Austin is being shut down:

On Redfall, the disastrous vampire co-op game will now not receive promised updates as Microsoft has ended all development on the game. Microsoft said Redfall will remain online to play, and it will provide a "make-good" offer for those who bought the Hero DLC.
basically, those DLC updates are dead.

Re: REDFALL: Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows - May 2, 2023

I'm not celebrating or gloating but instead actually sad to hear and see what happened with four studios shutdown....not to mention how M.S did it which is stunning. I remember seeing the trailer shown at I think the game Awards and actually thought, Wow, this looks fun and a sort of updated "Left4Dead". And at the time still thinking of getting a XBox or PC for Starfield, some Gears of War and then saw this. It was almost seeing a bit of the Glory Days of XBox 360.

It's been a rough almost two years for Studios and Devs and even more so over the past 6 months. Doesn't matter what side of the Gaming Fence you're on, it's just sad seeing any studio shutdown. A week ago I was looking forward to the XBox Showcase said to come in June but here it is a month away and M.S goes out and "send a email" letting the Studios bye, see ya later while at the same moment highlights a awesome new controller...Good take on the entire situation blow. Hope it all works out; benefit everyone....
