Re: REDFALL: Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows - May 2, 2023

Interesting tidbit pointed out elsewhere online…
The order that the company names show up when you boot up this game are:
Bethesda
Roundhouse
Arkane Austin

Roundhouse appearing before Arkane is a bit surprising, given it seems like they were only announced as ‘supporting’ this game. For those who don’t know, Roundhouse is a new studio staffing (all?) of the former employees of Human Head Studios after Bethesda bought them in 2019.

HHS was active from 1997 to 2019, and made such games as… Brink, The Quiet Man, Prey (the 2006 game, not the Arkane one), and umm Blair Witch Volume II: The Legend of Coffin Rock.

So Redfall is the first game Roundhouse is now known to have worked on since HHS ended. That’s not to say it’s their fault the game is in the state it’s in, but it suggests their role was more than just support for Arkane, at the very least.

Interesting read...and it's not the only one with the same tone and opinion of Redfall I've seen. If this game doesn't meet expectations or does fairly good, add all the delays, ball drops (Halo) and basically MS putting all their chips on Starfield that when delayed then fell on Redfall......wonder what's next....

I feel like that's an issue a lot of co-op games have these days.

Did Phil say it "kinda sucks" or is that your BS because you were not happy with "so disappointing"?

He said “so disappointing”. “Kinda sucks” was my artistic license. I think the spirit is the same. Do you disagree?

All this talk about how much it sucks and devs apologizing makes me want to play it I preloaded it but never fired it up because of all the bad talk.

Game quality is subjective so if the face of a platform is out here saying developers new games suck that is not a good look. It would make me less likely to want to release games on that platform.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
better to admit when a studio releases a ‘disappointing’ game than to just quietly shut them down mid-project.

Yes. It’s ok, but nothing to get excited about unfortunately. Definitely has some technical issues that need to be fixed, and some more variance to the missions. Maybe that will come over time, but more likely that they complete their contractual obligations and move on to the next game.

I’ll give it a few more hours of playtime, then go try Prey.

I tried twice, but never did finish Prey. I got real far, but I’m stuck at this point and have no idea how to get to where I need or how to play it anymore. 😂

Re: REDFALL: Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows - May 2, 2023

That's not my opinion, that's the IGN review. There's someone who actually says the game sucks. Personally, I wanted the game to be good, as I have paid for years of Game Pass in advance on the assumption that there would be great new first-party games to play on the system.
Do you actually like the game Music, or do you only come to complain about other people's comments?

I'm completely aware that is IGN's review, how could I not be?

As I stated before I do like the game for what it is when playing in a group, but yes, it could be a lot better.

The only other post I made in this thread was calling you out on your BS.

Okay, in the interest of calling out BS : who was the Emperor Palpatine meme directed towards? Because I certainly didn't say anything hateful in my quoted post, just posted the just-dropped IGN final review, which was brutal.

Re: REDFALL: Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows - May 2, 2023

Inside the Making of Redfall, Xbox’s Latest Misfire

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...microsoft-deal

likely paywalled, so here’s some snippets…

Development of Redfall began in 2018. At the time, ZeniMax — the large, privately held owner of Bethesda Softworks — was looking to sell itself. Behind the scenes, the company was encouraging its studios to develop games that could generate revenue beyond the initial sales, a popular trend dubbed “games as a service,” which was taking off in the late 2010s thanks to lucrative hits like Overwatch and Fortnite.
Arkane was also perpetually understaffed, said people familiar with its production. The studio’s Austin office employed less than 100 people— sufficient for a relatively small, single-player game like Prey but not enough to compete with multiplayer behemoths like Fortnite and Destiny, which are developed by teams of hundreds. Even additional support from ZeniMax’s Wisconsin-based Roundhouse Studios and other outsourcing houses couldn’t fill the gaps, they say.

Morale at Arkane suffered. Veteran workers who weren’t interested in developing a multiplayer game left in droves. By the end of Redfall’s development, roughly 70% of the Austin staff who had worked on Prey would no longer be at the company, according to people familiar as well as a Bloomberg analysis of LinkedIn and Prey’s credits.
The acquisition gave some staff at Arkane hope that Microsoft might cancel Redfall or, better yet, let them reboot it as a single-player game, according to sources familiar with the production. Instead, Microsoft maintained a hands-off approach. Aside from canceling a version of Redfall that had been planned for rival Sony Corp.’s PlayStation, Microsoft allowed ZeniMax to continue operating as it had before, with great autonomy. Microsoft’s Spencer would later say in the Kinda Funny interview that Xbox “didn’t do a good job early in engaging Arkane Austin.”
chasing GaaS (barf) and having such a large number of people leave because they didn’t want to make a MP game… yeah, things seemed much worse than expected.

FWIW, I played though the whole game. It was mostly fine. I like Arkane games, though. This had a bunch of random bugs… was way too easy at times… but also great music… funny NPC banter… good maps… kinda basic quests… etc.

It sounds like it was never going to be any kind of system seller, though, and nobody internally seemed to think it was.

Regardless, sad to see Arkane Austin take such a huge hit. I hope they can recover and focus on something great.

Re: REDFALL: Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows - May 2, 2023

I always wonder why games, especially games made at a big studio, ship with apparently a huge number of bugs at launch. You can't make a bad game into a good one (or a MP into a single-player game) in a matter of weeks or months, but it seems like fixing these many glitches that mar the game and hurt the review scores seems like something that should be do-able.

Cyberpunk made back it's dev cost during pre-orders, I believe. Why would studio heads care about bugs or ratings when they're in the black before release day?
