I need to give that one another shot. The gameplay mechanics are great but the missions did nothing for me when I gave it a first go

If Spider-Man is still too mixed a bag when you fire it up again, consider Miles Morales instead. It's a much tighter experience (you could very easily knock it out in a weekend), Miles has a much more impressive powerset, and the characterization and the-city-is-a-character-too!-ishness of it all is much improved as well. It's so much better that the idea of playing as Peter again is kind of a drag.

does MM have a tutorial? i thought playing SM first will at least get me used to the mechanics, but i did want to play MM bc i just saw Into the Spider-Verse again...

I don't remember there being a dedicated tutorial, but new mechanics are introduced very gradually, and the early battles have prompts and such to get you situated.
