Re: Sony buying Bungie
Looks like for $3.6 billion
Edit: I see this was posted in PS thread. Sounds like they will operate the same as always and will continue to be multi-platform

At least this is not a situation like Rare where it kind of felt like they fit in so well with Nintendo that when Microsoft bought them, there was (justified) fear that they would lose something. But at this point what's the major difference between the Playstation and Xbox platforms/design sense?

Re: Sony buying Bungie
Xbox owns the rights to Halo, like Sony owned the rights to Ratchet & Clank back when Insomniac was independent. Sony never would have had a shot to take it, even when Bungie was making Halo games. Now they might have been able to make Destiny exclusive going forward but apparently that won't happen.
Has Bungie made anything other than Destiny since leaving the Xbox fold? Seems like a weird company to want to acquire.

It is a weird acquisition. Marathon and Myth aren't worth much and Destiny is questionable.

I mentioned in the other thread, I haven't played it in years and have no idea what their new content is and why I should buy what looks like massively overpriced DLC. Figure I would be totally lost at this point. Enjoyed it back in the day.
Apparently this deal is to acquire Bungie and keep their company independent and their games multiplatform. Don't really understand the business strategy here. Feel like we're not be given the whole story.

I mentioned it in the other thread too but I don't think this is just to get Destiny, they seem to position it as getting experience in the live service kind of games since most of the Sony franchises are mainly focused on single player. I'm not a big Destiny 2 player though so I have no idea how big that IP is, but it makes sense if they want to leverage that team to do more than just Destiny 2.

Re: Sony buying Bungie
Not just mentorship but a very large team with demonstrated success in an area where Sony isn’t really a factor. It’s not that different than Take Two buying Zynga. Sure, they could hire experienced mobile developers, but by gobbling up Zynga, they get all the expertise, infrastructure, yadda yadda.
And as a bonus, Sony gets a best in class FPS dev.

It's a medium deal, maybe? Certainly different than Bethesda and Activision/Blizzard which are huge companies with multiple multi-console franchises. Bungie is essentially Destiny and not much else, at least since leaving Xbox.

Re: Sony buying Bungie
They have at least one other game (new IP) in development, and they've been looking to expand outside of gaming. (They brought someone from Viacom/CBS onto the board a little while back.)

makes no sense to me either on this...bungie has over 600 Employees worldwide that basically just keeps churning out more content for game that already had the foundation in place in 2017 when it was released...Bungie IMHO has been lazy and not doing much of anything....and Destiny 2 has been nothing more than a continued overpriced add-on service while other games (like Warframe) expand with Free Content.. Maybe Sony sees some potential...like maybe a Halo style game for PS4/PS5. I'd rather see them grab Obsidian or Bethesda instead of MS but $3.6 Billion is better than $70 billion I guess...

I mean even just looking at the other guys who were just bought up, how much do you think Blizzard relied on that WoW money?

Just because nothing has been publicly revealed yet doesn't mean they don't have other irons in the fire.

There has been something about one game in development but not much info of any kind or even images...they did hire a key Dev who worked on Guild Wars 2 and supposedly might be a PvP Base game, that's all......they have Halo but for some reason or another that game got constant delays and put on the back-burner it seemed..
Pretty interesting read and take on just why Sony did buy Bungie though.... Why Sony bought Bungie for $3.6 billion - Protocol — The people, power and politics of tech
It's no secret that Sony has put Live Service Gaming as their priority and look at Bungie to help out especially with Destiny 2 being a model for it. Destiny 2 The Witch Queen has a record 10 Million Pre-orders...But I know a lot of people who stil play and also quit getting burned out with the revolving door of rehashed stuff and nothing really new. Live Service games is basically establishing the foundation of a game and then just doing constant add-on and DLC paid for packs. if that floats everyone's boat so be it....
