Whoa. That could be a game-changer.

I wonder how the base model is for performance, or if you really need at least the mid-level to play most games.

Does performance go up with the models? It looks like it's more (and faster) storage and other things like the glass on the screen.

I think I will pick up a mid-level one. Seems like the sweet spot between price and functionality.

That seems like a pretty shitty screen for the specs of that, resolution-wise.

I’ve heard you all mention Stream, mostly in the Game Deals thread. But not being a hardcore gamer anymore, could someone explain why this could be a game changer? Mostly due to competition for the Switch? Better game variety?

Huge library of very cheap games, most of which we already own in our libraries. That would be a portable system with almost infinite number of games.

Huge variety plus a lot of us already own a ton of games on Steam which will work on this. Play portable on this then pick up at the same spot when you're back at your PC...etc.

The library of indie games on Steam make this worth the purchase, IMO.

it's not the only place to buy PC games these days, but it's the leader with like 90% of the marketshare. Basically... if you buy PC games, they're more than likely going to be in your Steam library. That's it. Think of it like your phone's app store, but for PC games. Everything in one place.

Games are often on sale, but not always. People do pay full price for PC games on Steam.

"Steam" not "Stream" though "Streaming" will probably be a big part of this

If you have a game not purchased from Steam (but available on Steam) will it be playable on this device?

They said you can install the Epic Game Store, uPlay, and Origin. So it'll have more than just your actual Steam library available.

Those of us who got Watch Dogs and/or Valhalla for free for PC hardware purchases look to be in luck.

Yes :

Steam Deck – Software and OS

The Steam Deck will draw immediate comparisons to the Nintendo Switch, but while it might look like a handheld console, Valve’s device really does have more in common with a desktop gaming PC when it comes to its capabilities. The Steam Deck runs a custom version of Steam OS that gives you a console-like experience on the surface without having to worry about things like drivers or setup, but under the hood is a full-blown PC for those that want the freedom to go deeper. The OS is built on Proton, a version of Linux that supports both Windows and Linux games and applications.

This flexibility means you can do pretty much anything on the Steam Deck that you can do with a regular PC. Connect a mouse and keyboard? Yep. Alt-Tab out of your games to a browser or video? Sure. Load third-party programs or even other game stores like Origin, uPlay, or Epic Games Store? No problem. You could even wipe Steam OS entirely and install a fresh version of Windows if you want – but the default Steam OS is smooth and efficient at getting you into your games, so I imagine most people won’t want or need to go that far. The point is, you can if you’d like to.

“We don't think people should be locked into a certain direction or a certain set of software that they can install,” Valve designer Lawrence Yang told IGN. “If you buy a Steam Deck, it's a PC. You can install whatever you want on it, you can attach any peripherals you want to it. Maybe a better way to think about it is that it's a small PC with a controller attached as opposed to a gaming console.”

Their timing worked. This announcement made me completely forget that Switch Oled was going up for pre-order today an hour ago.

Ha, yes - STEAM. Typo. Well this could potentially be pretty neat. I think I collected some games from when you all put up announcements on free games, but I don’t game on my PC. I would play on this.

This is pretty cool. I don’t use Steam as I’m not one for PC gaming, but I really like handhelds. I could see being interested in a device like this, and trying out some PC titles, as well as it would be fun to to revisit some older titles I played back in the day. May be something I consider picking up in the future.

Re: Steam Deck - Dec 2021 - $399, $529, and $649

Don't know if I have a desire to play my games on a handheld even though I have a truckload of indie games in my Steam library but that still pretty cool.

Reservations start tomorrow. In an effort to curtail scalping, in order to place a reservation during the first 48 hours you must have made a previous purchase on Steam prior to June. That's also pretty cool.

I have a number of games on steam, but since we only have Macs at home, some aren’t playable. I would consider picking this up. Plus, I love handhelds.

Re: Steam Deck - Dec 2021 - $399, $529, and $649

Since it's only targeting 1280x800, performance should actually be pretty decent... But if you're docking it to use on a TV, I can see how it might not perform nearly as well, but I think portable mode will be used far more often with this thing.

Still... I'm waiting for some real reviews in December. Maybe Deck 2.0.

Re: Steam Deck - Dec 2021 - $399, $529, and $649

I'll have to wait for performance reviews. I have a 4 year old laptop that I use for gaming when I travel with a 1060 Max, it's starting to show its age a bit but I'm assuming it's still stronger than these things.

I do wonder if this will push more developers to finally get native Linux support in their titles.
