Bravely Default II (2/26/21: Switch)

Trailer from March 2020

I was a big fan of Octopath Traveler so I'm looking forward to finally giving this series a try since it's now off handhelds. This is the third in the Bravely series but is a new and unrelated story and characters from the other 2 games (so Final Fantasy like). There is a "final" demo up on the Switch which gives you 5 hours to play if you want but doesn't carry over to an actual playthrough. I like to go in fresh so I skipped it but from I read the developers actually made some significant changes to the game based on the feedback to the first demo. Best Buy looks to have an exclusive pre-order bonus for the game (a coaster and placemat set) that doesn't show on the listing but gets added on in your cart.

Anyone else going check it out?

Big fan of Octopath Traveler as well. Despite never finishing it, I've put ~70 hrs into it last I checked. I downloaded the demo for this but I'm just going to hold off until the full game releases. One of the biggest complaints about this that I've seen online is about the art style/graphics, but I think it looks fantastic.

I was a big fan of the original until it got near the end. If II is anything like it, I will pass.
Spoiler:
After you collect the 4 crystals something happens with the time line and you have to go collect them again........and then again......and then I quit but when I looked it up I think you had to do it 2 more times after that. Re-finding your friends and re-fighting for the crystals over and over killed any momentum or story the game had.

That sounds like an extremely annoying way to prolong the game for no real reason.

Yeah, that is what I thought too. Once would have been okay...anything more was annoying.

Just got my copy today in the mail. I just finished a big JRPG (Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore) so I think I'm going to play a few other games before actually starting it. It's getting good reviews most in the 8 range. Looks like the majority of complaints are about it feeling very old school rpg-ish and very difficult. I could have sworn they already said there would be difficulty settings so I guess I'll find out if that is the case.

Been a couple of years since I played Bravely Default for my Nintendo 3DS. Should play through that one more time for old times sake

I have about 15 hours in. I had forgotten how addicted I can get to grindy turn-based RPGs. This one may be too difficult for the less dedicated fans although it does have an option for Easy mode. The dungeons are long and the boss fights are brutal if you're not prepared.

If you're playing this, make sure to level a decent variety of jobs. The game likes to throw in mobs with many immunities that you have to get around.

I have this purchased at Best Buy with one of my last GCU discounts :rip: . I still haven't picked it up. I probably no longer have the time or the patience for a grindy difficult RPG. So I may pass on this entirely. Not sure yet. My pre-order came with a placemat or something.

Placemat (mini poster) & coasters.

Ugh, this game is longer than it needs to be. Over 50 hours in now and I still have a good ways to go (not even counting post-game bosses).

Re: Bravely Default II (2/26/21: Switch)

I am having a hell of a time building any momentum towards wanting to play this game. I'm maybe 10-12 hours in, and I'm absolutely struggling. The combat is my biggest issue. I don't like how I have no idea how much damage an ability will do to any given enemy. And an ability will do a wildly different amount of damage to two separate enemies with the same weakness. This, along with no obvious turn order, makes it difficult to play with any real strategy.

I love the look of this game and I'm a sucker for turn based combat, but this is testing my patience.

Looking it up, the average play time is generally reported between 35 to 60 hours.

I call BS on anyone claiming to finish the game in 35 hours. Even if you skip every side quest, you still have to grind for both character and job levels. My guess is those times were people playing on Easy.
