I had curbside pickup at Best Buy, and I had my copy within a minute of arriving.

Glad there doesn’t appear to be a true shortage of the physical copy of this. I work tonight and tomorrow so probably won’t make it to GameStop to get mine until Sunday. Looking forward to getting it.

I get that Nintendo's obligated to include the ESRB rating on the card, but the design looks so weird with everything shifted over like that.

I got the same email from Best Buy saying it would arrive late, and yet here I am with 5 stars in Mario 64.

Anyone know if the Super Mario 64 DS content is included? I don’t think it is, but wish it would be. Maybe later on as DLC.

That’s a shame. It adds quite a bit of content. Like 30 extra stars and mini games. Hopefully it’ll be available as DLC at some point.

Well, I still do have my copy for DS. It would be nice to have it on Switch though. I probably played the DS version as much or maybe even slightly more than the N64 version.

I'm surprised how much I remember from Mario 64, it's almost like muscle reflex memory. The controls are very touchy/sensitive (at least for Mario 64 and Sunshine), going to take me a bit to get comfortable with.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch; 9/18/20)

So much nostalgia, but I’m also noticing how similar Fall Guys mechanics are to this game - and how antiquated the camera system is (despite being innovative for its time)

And I really appreciate the “grab a ledge and climb up” mechanic a lot more now - they didn’t have to do that back then. They could have just said “if you hit the edge of a ledge, fuck you, you fall down” like a lot of today’s games, but no. Here, you get a chance to climb up. A ton of innovations that I’m appreciating for a different reason today.

Whatever.
That change wasn’t made for this release. It was part of the Shindau rerelease in 1997 with Rumble Pack support.

I learned that on a You Tube video review.

I got mine yesterday. If the prices went crazy on EBay I was gonna sell it but it didn’t happen so I’m keeping it. Now I just have to convince my 8 year old to let me use his Switch.

Amazon just refunded $10 to my account on this as part of the preorder price guarantee. Random.

I played Mario 64 and despite the nostalgia, it is just not really that fun to play.

Especially not with that shitty camera system.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch; 9/18/20)

It’s always been one of my favorites. I’ve played it as recently as the past couple years or so too. So it isn’t just nostalgia speaking. Games from that era in general often had weird camera angles to work around.

I'm really more curious about the other two titles personally. Particularly Super Mario Sunshine. I already know once I pick this game up tomorrow it’s probably going to consume a lot of my game playing time.

I'm kinda hoping that this is limited because they'll release the games separately later for download, at which point I'll just get Galaxy (and they'll add Galaxy 2 as well), since I have zero desire for the other two.

When it came out that camera system was revolutionary. But yeah it's definitely rough compared to like Super Mario Odyssey. It's manageable though I haven't played 64 for at least 15 years and it hasn't been too bad in the few hours I've played.

Not a dealbreaker by any means, but that is slightly annoying. Ah well I guess the game card will be in the Switch or in the case.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch; 9/18/20)

Imo, Mario 64 always felt more like a tech demo than a full blown game, it took years for it to grow on me - those og 3d platformers were surprisingly barren, Tomb Raider comes to mind as well.

But I dunno, I definitely appreciated it as an adult more than i did as a teen.

Wow I feel the complete opposite. Having started gaming on the NES, Mario 64 blew me. The graphical jump from the SNES to 64 was incredible. To this day it ranks in the top 5 games for me and probably the best Mario game.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch; 9/18/20)

The huge difference between the 2d titles and the 3d ones is how well the 2d ones hold up. You can play Super Mario World now or give it someone to play for the first time and it would still feel fresh. It plays well and looks good. You give a kid Super Mario 64 and it feels old. It controls poorly and looks dated. There have been so many advances in 3d platforming especially with the camera and controls that is rough to go back to. When playing Odyssey or even 3D World you're not constantly fighting the cameras or the controls like 64 and Sunshine. These 2 games would have benefitted the most from being completely remade in the Odyssey engine. As it is now they are time capsules more than fun games and that's how I'm treating them while playing. I appreciate the history of these games but they are not fun to play in 2020.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch; 9/18/20)

I agree the 2D graphics/animation style is more timeless looking. It can be revamped, but overall the style holds up over time. Whereas with 3D it’s had a lot more tweaking over the last twenty-four years.

Combine that with camera angles and controls that were new and imperfect I can see where some may have a harder time with some of the classic games.

I agree that I would have liked to have seen the games in this collection remade, but I also am happy to have these games available to play.
