I've had an XSX for a couple weeks. Agreed, not a game changer (digital download was a game changer, wireless controllers were a game changer, I think GP/GPU is a game changer).
But man, it's a really nice quality-of-life improvement feature. Console is virtually instant-on, I love the Quick Resume (although the clock in DQXI still ticks so it looks like I've played 100 hours more than I have), and loading games isn't no-wait, but much less wait.
I haven't really played any XSX-specific games yet.

they have said this will NOT be supported. The SSD expansion slot will be activated at some point to store/play PS5 games. But external drive through USB will never be able to play PS5 games.

Never said "play", we know you can't play PS5 games from external drives, but can we store them there.

Moving full games from one drive to another takes a while for PS4 games. IMO, it would just be quicker to re-download a PS5 game rather than move it to external when you're done, then back if you want to play it again.

Unless you have capped internet or something.

And can the transfer be done in the background? Downloading should be able to be in the background (again, your internet speed and usage limits will affect your decision).

No, you have to wait for it to finish. I don't know this for sure but I'd imagine you can't put it in rest mode while transferring either.
