I know it's the cornerstone of their business model but I just don't see how giving away use of their top exclusive games as part of a subscription service is sustainable or even smart.
For the record, I might not be wrong about that.

FWIW, what Phil Spencer said in 2018 was echoed by devs with titles on Game Pass around that time (admittedly on the indie side of things, IIRC) and was supported (or at least not refuted) by NPD sales numbers as recently as 2021. And with all the context redacted, Iím not sure itís explicitly a negative towards Game Pass; they could sell fewer copies of individual games but still ultimately come out well with subscription revenue over the course of a year.

From where I'm sitting, whatever. If it's sustainable, I get to enjoy shiny, new AAA games and indie games I like as part of a relatively cheap subscription (although I'm sure the price will inevitably go up from where it is now). If it's not sustainable, I get to enjoy those benefits until Microsoft shifts towards something else. And if Game Pass turns into "all first-party games show up eventually, but not necessarily on day one, plus there are all these indie games too", that's fine. I didn't have a problem buying games before Game Pass or while I've been an active Game Pass subscriber, and I won't balk later.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

The entire headline is based on a single data point, with a redacted number to boot. Even still, for those that didn't bother to read the story, the line was (emphasis mine)
Microsoft also submitted that its internal analysis shows a [redacted]% decline in base game sales twelve months following their addition on Game Pass.
No fucking shit. This could be said for literally anything. Aside from games with seemingly impossible staying power (AAA games, GaaS types, a handful of beloved indies, and so on), what games show any kind of increase 12 months after release, let alone 12 months after being on GP?
People will believe what they want to believe, but I'm actually pretty surprised at how many people are running with this as if it's some smoking gun to prove that GP is unsustainable or something.

MS gave an official comment to Kotaku, in that same piece:
Xbox Game Pass offers gamers and game creators more choice and opportunity in how they discover, experience, and deliver games. For gamers, that means providing another option for them to discover games and play with friends at a great value. For developers, that means creating another option for how they monetize their games.

We’re focused on helping game creators of all sizes maximize the total financial value they receive through Game Pass. Each game is unique, so we work closely with creators to build a custom program to reflect what they need, ensure they are compensated financially for their participation in the service, and allow room for creativity and innovation. As a result, the number of developers interested in working with Game Pass continues to grow.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

Yeah, does that mean FOR 12 months after release, or BEGINNING 12 months after release? Very different messages. I'm sure that was part of even the initial discussions and estimates; "if our sales are X% lower due to GP, how much would it take for us to be OK with the game on GP?"
It sounds like BEGINNING 12 months after release, which as you say, is pretty commonplace. A meaningful perspective would be to do the same analysis with games that AREN'T on GP, and odds are the findings would be as you say.
I've bought a few games that are on GP. More importantly, I pretty much never buy full-price games anymore, and that's not due to GP.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I've taken a "Hold & Pause on getting either a XBox or PC for now. When MS had all thos layoffs it sort of sent up a Red Flag that only became worse when I heard how much on the gaming side got hit. Followed by news of more delays, projects cancelled, etc....I've seen analyst comments and predictions on The State of XBox Pass with Day One Titles and seemed like a majority said it would be hard to sub stain especially Day One AAA titles. But the issue here is taking sales away from Devs also...

Games that are offered on all platform yet may get on XBP probably fair better ....like Atomic Heart coming it's on all platforms yet on XBP day one. But I've asked about Bethesda with Starfield which is XB & PC only along with Redfall which is DAYOne XBP....Games will do good but what about sales in general since it's XB/PC exclusive...

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I don't know how Microsoft can tell how it affects 1st party game sales when they don't release anything.

For third party stuff, well people keep signing up for it so whatever they're paying out must be lucrative enough. I guess one way to look at it is they're keeping cross platform gamers on their platform. Also I'd be way more tempted to upgrade my PS Plus if I didn't already have super cheap Gamepass (and I don't really have the time to play both).

Is this a good deal for an Xbox Controller? I need one for my PC. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/xb...oaAopOEALw_wcB

They also have one at Target for 50 cents cheaper https://www.target.com/p/xbox-series...84#lnk=sametab

They've dropped to 40 or 45 before, but 50 isn't bad. Those lower prices were during the holiday season, though.

Do they ever go on sale for that price during Easter? I can wait on it a little, but I don't really want to wait until Black Friday.

Just going by slickdeals searches, seems like they were $45 that time last year.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I ended up going ahead and ordering a controller and battery pack. I didn't realize they didn't come with a rechargeable battery. I ordered them both from Microsoft since they had both in stock. Amazon had the controller for $49, but it wouldn't be delivered until the middle of March. Microsoft could have the controller and battery delivered by Feb. 28th.

I didn't even want or need this but I know someone gives you an Xbox for 150 you take it

Edit: I just realized that because I have Gamepass Ultimate, I now have every single Gamepass game on the XBOX! And I get free crappy games every month to keep!

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

If you have Game Pass already, picking up a cheap XSX makes a ton of sense. But not for the Games with Gold.

First stop : Power Wash Simulator. You'll thank me later.

I've been playing Power Wash Simulator whenever I have a chance to now that I have PC Game Pass.
