I'm not sure I get this Series S. So microsoft decided to launch this new generation (in playstation terms) with a PS and PSPro at the same time? They are fracturing their base right at the start? I haven't really been keeping up with these new consoles, because I'm broke, but this seems weird to me.

It's not really fracturing their base because all the same software runs on both... one will just be able to run 4K at high frame rates and the other will run 1440p at high frame rates.

It's 200 bucks cheaper and there's a lot of people going digital only anyways, they realized it's foolish to not try to capture that part of the market that usually waits two years for the price drop that will inevitably happen. Get them now and get them into the ecosphere. Maybe even convert a few into upgrading to the X if they see enough games they like and want the better performance.

If you don't care about discs, are cool playing on your HDTV, and/or are price-conscious, the Xbox Series S can be really compelling. In every other respect, it's the same as its gigantic big brother X (same CPU, still has SSD storage, ray-tracing, etc.).

It opens up an audience to Microsoft than Sony isn't capitalizing on.

MS has released a short video about it.

Yeah I dont get the split. The S is cheaper and plays all the games? So the X just has more under the hood?

I have been all digital this entire current gen, so thats no big deal for me.

re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

Do we know the exact specs of the S? But yes, will play all the same games, but not as smoothly, etc. depending on optimization. This will probably be a bigger difference later down the road, I'm not sure how much launch games usually tax new systems but it probably isn't that much.

The other big thing is no disc slot so no physical backward compatibility, etc.

The problem I see, which is similar to PS4, is that I'm already complaining about performance of some games on PS4, and the response I get online is, Oh, it runs fine on ps4 pro, just upgrade to that. I don't want to buy a console that is already purposefully sub-par when it's released.

re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

Yeah, pretty sure the specs are a step down. Still good, but not as good as the X. The X is the premier system but the S is the "it's darn good enough" level.

Though, not for us.

Which is why they have the expensive version for you. this is the "don't have a 4k tv yet but want to dip my toe in and not spend a boatload" people, I think.

I will for sure wait to get the Series X once they have a game I want to play. Nothingg seems to stand out except that Dinosaur hunting game which im sure will be on XB1.

I would prefer having a disc drive for the perk of being able to rent games from the video store. I live near one and have never had an issue renting a game on release day. :)

Right, with the HOPE that they will make sure the games run smoothly on the S at 1080p and 60 fps, and that the devs don't get their funding cut and time crunches and say "Well it runs great on the REAL xbox, those cheap bastards that bought the S knew it was inferior, so it's no biggie if it runs like shit".

Which makes it even more stupid to buy a Series S at launch if you already have an Xbox One X because you could probably play the same games at the same resolution already.

Yeah, the S sounds more like a lateral move* just so you can play games that will only work on next gen consoles.

*for most of us, but then again this version of the next Xbox isn't for most of us.

re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I wouldn't expect a whole lot of folks to go from the One X to the Series S, though I'm sure there's some percentage that will. Remember that MS is sticking with:
One S - new price unknown
Series S - $299 or $25/month
Series X - $499 or $35/month

Monthly price is for two years and includes Game Pass Ultimate.

I'm not interested in the Series S, but I think I get it's appeal as an entry level next gen system, especially at the monthly rate if finances are tighter month to month. I've seen a lot of folks complaining elsewhere about the SSD size (512gb), but I don't think normal folks care about that at all. Same goes for 4K performance and other under-the-hood stuff.

I'm not totally convinced it'll actually sell well... Only that the price is pretty damn aggressive. Perception will make it break it, I think.

I like the estimated. Come Sony, undercut their price so MS has to respond!

Even if Sony undercuts them, we're probably done with Playstation for now. The PS1 and 2 were massively played in our households, but the 3 and 4 just didn't get that much love. The Xbox ecosphere is so much more of what we want these days. We're probably down for the X for Xmas this year.

re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

Wow, it's going to cost 25 bucks a month just to connect to xbox live now - that is absolutely insane and I'm definitely not paying for that. I can't believe this will be the first time in years I don't buy a new console.

"Oh but you get access to all the games on game pass" yeah - all of those games are garbage too.

Someone please correct if I'm wrong in what I'm saying because I sure hope I am, if not.......what the hell are they thinking??

Nowhere does it says Xbox live is going to be $25 a month.
