PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Sony's starting to reveal a little more about the PS5 via Wired and their own blog.

Since I'm trying to write this as I dash out the door (stupid dented Toy Story 4 steelbook from Best Buy!), I'll copy/paste Kotaku's summary:

  • It’ll be called the PS5 and be out for holiday 2020, as we’ve been reporting.
  • The console will have a solid-state drive. Games will be released on 100GB discs.
  • Like the PlayStation 4 Pro, the PlayStation 5 reads physical media via a 4K Blu-ray drive.
  • As with games this generation, they’ll need to be installed from the disc, though Sony is now saying that players will have more granular control of which parts of a game they install or uninstall—campaign, multiplayer, etc.
  • The PS5’s revised user interface will show more information about what can be done in a game, including the availability of multiplayer matches.
  • Wired’s writer held a prototype of the new PS5 controller and wrote that it seems similar to a PS4 controller. It will include a speaker and—here comes some of the jargon you’ll start to see reporters and game makers using to discuss next-gen hardware—“‘adaptive triggers’ that can offer varying levels of resistance to make shooting a bow and arrow feel like the real thing.”
  • Wired was also impressed with the improved haptics/rumble in the controller, reporting this of their time using it to play demos created by the Studio Japan team behind PS4 VR game Astrobot Rescue Mission: “On ice, a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding. Jumping into a pool, I got a sense of the resistance of the water; on a wooden bridge, a bouncy sensation.”
  • For those of you who stocked up on micro USB wires for charging PS4 controllers, too bad! The PS5 controllers will be charged with USB Type-C.
  • One studio that is now confirmed as a PS5 developer is Bluepoint Games, makers of the 2018 Shadow of the Colossus remake. Said studio president Marco Thrush to Wired: “We’re working on a big one right now...I’ll let you figure out the rest.” Uh. Hmm. Clearly a tease that Sony has bought the rights to F-Zero and is making a new one. Thrush was enthusiastic about the speedier loading that comes with an SSD, noting that there’d be less reason to slow players down in hallways and doorways to mask the loading of new levels.
  • Sony’s announcements today primarily focus on the new controller, which is the main focus of Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan’s blog post today. “Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller,” he wrote, “and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.” With controllers going out, the news today seems designed to get ahead of any leaks of the device.

Wow, there wasn't an official PS5 thread?

I'm looking forward to this. And I'm glad they're continuing to support physical discs, and having a 4K drive will be great.

Definite a day 1 purchase for me.

Physical 4K disc support!* :bdance: The controller sounds amazing. Hopefully the new features aren't totally abandoned after 6 months like the touchpad on the DS4.

*I wonder how many lost PS4 Pro sales there were because of the decision to not support it. I know I personally bought a Xbox One Slim FOR the 4K support over a PS4 Pro.

I'd be up for a Playstation 5, count me in!

Wasn't it going to be priced at $800 or something on release day?

Obviously a day one purchase regardless of price. Bring on the Amazon pre-order!

Not a chance. I bet they do two skus, a $400 & $500.

PS3 and XB1 tripped right out of the gate with their high price tags and struggled to recover.

Yeah, releasing a console at $800 would be suicidal.

That was an analyst (Pachter) predicting a price based on what he heard the tech was in the PS4. In other words, he pulled that number out of his ass. Here's an article about it. IIRC, he walked it back a week later when the gaming community lost their shit.

Yeah, same. We've always been a Nintendo/Sony family (and Sega when they did hardware), the Xbox was for stuff like Halo and Call of Duty. But when the PS4 didn't do 4k discs but the Xbox One S did, we got the one with Minecraft bundled in and then discovered the Games with Gold and Gamepass and it's probably our most played console (mostly Kingdom, but still...)

I'm not sure if we're even interested in a PS5 at this point. We finally got a PS4 this past summer for my son's birthday, we found a used one with a few games pretty cheap and he plays Spider-Man a bit, but that's about it. Otherwise we use it as our primary Bluray/DVD player in the living room.

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

As mainly a PC gamer these days, I only just got a PS4 in August 2018 when a friend offered to sell me his for $175 including two controllers and 15 games because he was buying the Spider-man PS4 Pro bundle upgrade. The last console I bought before that was a PS3 and that was several years after it had been out and I honestly didn't play it a whole lot. So I'm not really interested in buying any next-gen consoles. It's really going to come down to whether there is any exclusive I really really want to play and if I come across some major deal on the console I can't pass up. Otherwise, I'm fully content with gaming on my PC. I use my PS4 controller on PC too, lol.

This PS 5 is going to take it to another level. Pretty awesome they are showing 4K support. This gives 4K media more life.

Sign me up. I skipped the Pro so this will be an easy choice. I just have to start saving now...

  • Like the PlayStation 4 Pro, the PlayStation 5 reads physical media via a 4K Blu-ray drive.

This is confusing because the PS4 Pro does NOT read physical 4K discs. Did they mean to say "unlike" or am I reading this wrong?

Anyway... Cool.
Depending on "where I'm at" this time next year, I might have to hold off on buying it early, but I will eventually get it. My PS4 Pro has got a bit more use in the last couple years with a few LRG discs and Nier: Automata and Horizon: Zero Dawn. I probably still won't bother with PS+ though... Not really sure why I never bothered to sign up, but I feel like it's way too late to start with that now.

I think they meant that like the PS4 Pro it also still is capable of reading physical discs. They just added the fact that it will be 4K however.

Sounds about right. Kotaku also changed that bullet point.

  • The PlayStation 5 reads physical media via a 4K Blu-ray drive.

That's more... Direct.

I'm in on day one. I have always bought both systems (PS and XB) But this time I around, I think I'm just going with the PS5. My poor Xbox One X is nothing but a dust collector, as I can't tell you the last time I played it.

I bet you they do, though...there will be a "loaded" version for $700 to $800 and a "bare bones" one for $500 to $600. I feel the opposite...I can't imagine them selling for less than $500 to $600. Wasn't the buzz on the PS3, as expensive as it was at the time, that it was actually a loss leader for Sony?

I always choose poorly. I went with the PS3 over the XBox360. Then I flipped sides when it was the XBox One vs. the PS4. I feel I made bad choices on both counts. I sold my PS3 long ago and just got rid of my XBox One last year...so I'm ready to make another poor investment. ;)

You could be onto something there. I have seen rumors that they would release a pro model in tandem at launch.

There is not going to be a $800 model. You are not going to see a video game console release for over $400-500 anytime in the next 5 years.

I'm in eventually. Got the Spidey PS4 Pro after my launch 4 was about to die. We'll see price point and how I feel next year.

I was going to upgrade my PS4 this Winter to a PS4 Pro (for 4K) but I might as well wait for this.
