Has there been another generation with multiple consoles so hard to get for so long? I remember friends having a really difficult time getting a Wii for months, but my memory is that pretty much every other fall launch console was easily available after Christmas.

Once again. Every other console launch didn't happen during a pandemic.

Absolutely, and that’s impacted both supply and demand. I wasn’t commenting on the cause, just trying to remember if there’s been any other instance where new consoles launched and stayed hard to get for so long. I will be curious to see if widespread vaccinations lower the demand enough to make them a bit easier to find.

And while the retailers and SCEA may differ on whether those shipments actually arrived each week, millions of potential PS2 buyers, who were craving for the the coolest Christmas gift of 2000 were turned away. Many retailers told disappointed customers that they should come back in March, once the pre-order customers orders were met. March 2001??!
To be sure, temporary shortages after the launch of a new machine are common in the video game business. But Microsoft’s continued inability to meet demand for Xbox 360 has irritated customers and disappointed video game publishers
For its part, Microsoft said it expected the shortage to ease in coming weeks, thanks to an additional manufacturing plant coming on line, and the balance between supply and demand should stabilize before the end of June.
SAN FRANCISCO – Sony Corp. (SNE) is on track to ship 2 million PlayStation 3s to North American stores by the end of March, and expects shortages of the video game console to have completely eased by May, a top executive said on Tuesday.
"April or May is when we feel like we're going to catch up to demand and have product fully in stock across North America and stay there," said Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

PlayStation 4 stock still isn’t adequate, according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House, and won’t meet demand in full for a few months yet.
Anyone who thought that the end of winter might mean a slight relief from the Sisyphean task of locating one of Sony's PS4s is in for disappointment.
“We’re struggling to keep up with demand,” which has been highest in the U.S. and Europe, House said. “Conservatively, as we get into the early summer months, we’ll be closer to a full supply situation.”

Wow, apparently my memory is complete shit these days. I wasn’t paying attention when PS2 launched, but feel like I remember those other 3 being relatively easy to get.

I have been a Sony Console owner since the PS1 but this is the only generation besides the PS2, that I got it right after launch. The reason I got the PS2 was because I was working at Toys R Us at the time and was able to secure one.
As others have stated, I used Twitter and Discord to buy mine in December and this week, I was able to buy the Disc version for my friend.

The older systems may have been easier to get due to being able to wait in line at B&M. Since we're all mostly confined to online ordering, we're at the mercy of those scalping bots. I waited outside a Best Buy probably 16 hours to get a PS2 on launch day.

It also seems like the console that stumbles out of the gate (PS3 & XB1) is easier to get your hands on which might affect perception of previous launches. Remember people posting pics of mountains of PS3s right after launch?

Well, a little over 4 months since my launch day PS5 was stolen from my porch, and I've finally received a PS5 by delivery today. Thank you Wario64.
I'm gonna start it off with Ghost of Tsushima.

I’m ending my search. I just put down a $500 deposit on a new instrument, an upgrade to an instrument that I play publicly.
Maybe one day when it’s easily obtainable I’ll bite, or maybe as a Christmas gift. To the rest of you still searching, may the odds be ever in your favor.

Damn. I loaded up PS+ a few years ago and apparently my shit ran out. Just got hit with the full $60 charge yesterday. I think this is the first time I've paid full price for either Live or PSN since they started.
Since I've had it loaded up for so long I never thought to look and see if there was a auto renew on/off feature. Turns out there is. Too late for me but maybe that info will help one of you.

That looks really cool. It also looks like it'll be really expensive.

I'm hoping no more than a 10 dollars per controller increase over the Dualsense. It all depends on what functionality the grip and what goes over your wrist has or if it is just a part of the dynamic look of the controller. I could see them implementing something in the controller that carries vibrations so that you feel sensations over the tops of your hands and wrists. I just hope they improve the connectivity of the VR headset, as the cable from the previous VR is my biggest hassle.
