I mean that wasn’t supposed to show gameplay. As a tech demo I thought it was remarkable. We haven’t seen anything remotely like that in current gen graphics.

I'm talking about graphical gameplay over juiced up game demos.

I thought that was some gameplay footage? From what the guys said at the beginning, this demo was supposed to show off cinematic look integrated into the gameplay. Looked pretty damn cool to me.

But not from an actual game. It's an amazing showcase (one might even say unreal!) of what next-gen games could have to offer down the road, but I'm itching to know what I'll be playing in November and December and what those games'll look like on the PS5/XBSX. Show me somethiiiiiiiiing.

Exactly, both of these consoles are juiced to the gills and I'm sure the games coming out for them will look fantastic but ....these demos aren't it yet.

At this point I'm surprised we haven't seen more... even if the consoles launch without a hitch (and I realize they already said there'd be shortages above and beyond the usual launch) what are the launch games even going to look like?

Eh, I'm kinda over graphics being pushed in the direction of utter realism, I'd prefer them to work on clipping issues and how a character will hold a teacup with the same stance they hold an anvil.

I'm more impressed with the proposed loading times... that's the #1 reason why I'll upgrade. That said, those graphics looks awesome.

That demo alone looks like a far bigger leap from current consoles than from the 360/PS3 to current gen.

I'm all for decreased loading times but doesn't that mean that extra storage is going to be pricey?

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Seems like ray tracing (among other things) is one of those improvements that does wonders for even the less 'beautiful' games. I've seen clips of Minecraft with ray tracing on, and it's kind of amazing. I think that's the not-so-secret improvement that these next gen consoles will have over the current gen. That, and just boatloads of power and speedy SSDs and...

Yeah, for sure... and that'll be the downside. I think 855GB is painfully low... SSD isn't cheap either.

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Doesn't Unreal release a tech demo like this for every iteration of their engine, all of which look very nice but are not really representative of what an actual game will look like? How is this any different? IMO, this is no better, and likely worse, than these game trailers that feature no game play. At least those are for actual games.

So far every step of the PS5 reveal feels bungled somehow. From the initial Wired article, to the GDC talk, to the controller reveal via blog post, to this engine tech demo -- it's all been so strange. I understand they probably had a whole road map laid out that was completely disrupted by COVID, but I just find it hard to believe that Sony couldn't pivot from those plans to something slightly more cohesive.

Microsoft hasn't been perfect with the Series X, but they came out of the gates super strong by showing the box and stating a release window.

I thought it was a particular kind of SSD as well (though thankfully not a Sony exclusive one)

I get both sides of it, but yeah. I'd rather see something to get me excited about a game than a tech demo.

I find it funny that someone like Geoff Keighley was throwing shade at MS with this during his live stream commentary of their event:

(that text was on his screen for 10+ minutes while watching the footage, not just interviews)

but then posts this with the PS5/Unreal stuff:

(slyly saying it's "gameplay of new demo created by EpicGames" and not a "new TECH demo of the Unreal Engine that isn't displaying anything exclusive to PS5's capabilities")

But it wouldn't be a game format war without this kind of... inconsistency.

From what I understand, the PS5 will dominate with the load times and the series X's ray tracing will be untouchable.

I still have no idea which console I am going with first, Xbox or PS5. I'm leaning toward the PS5, but Xbox can sway me with a decent price and better content out of the gate.

I've gone Playstation over Xbox every generation and it has never let me down. PS3 was a rough ride at the beginning, but they bounced back big time by the end of the gen.

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

The lead that Sony has in both their own first party games and 3rd party japanese support means that I will lean PS until something drastically changes. Gamepass and my two+ more years of it is a consideration, though. Honestly, I might not, for the first time in a long time, get either at launch.

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I'm sure I'll wind up getting both the PS5 and XBSX at launch, but I can't honestly say that I'm champing at the bit for either of them. The mid-gen revisions breathed enough into the PS4 and XB1 that the generation doesn't seem all that long in the tooth to me. I'm really hoping to be dazzled when Sony and Microsoft finally show their hands.

This will certainly change with Last of Us II and Ghost of Tsushima, but I have to admit that I've barely touched my PS4 Pro over the past couple of years.
