But is it right that, while most PS4 games will play on the PS5, whether or not your save data will transfer is another story? I certainly am not going to start over with, say, Assassins Creed Odyssey.
For backward compatible games, there would be an uproar if saved data couldn't migrate over, especially through the cloud.

For games that have different PS4 and PS5 versions, probably not.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

PlayStation Reveals Huge PS5 Backward Compatibility Details.

Sony has made a major announcement regarding this.

This was a big topic during prior console launches. It is an important topic as customers want to know whether their old favorites will be playable on their new next-gen console.

Physical space is an issue, especially when you see the size of some of these consoles. Packing away or selling the old console is preferable for most gamers, in the knowledge that they can play old games on the new console.

PlayStation 5 Backward Compatibility

Fans were addressed in a tweet, whilst answering various FAQs The short answer is YES, the PS5 will be backwards compatible. But vital further details about this have been revealed.

More than 99% of PS4 games are now confirmed to work on the PS5. What's more, is both the standard and digital versions will allow you to access your old PS4 digital library.

Signing into the PS5 will automatically show your old games library along with the menu. A big bonus is that the Standard Edition (with disc drive) will allow you to "also use physical PS4 game discs". This is huge news for some gamers, especially those who want to play their physical classics such as The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima.

This comes somewhat as a surprise, it may well influence customers to purchase the standard edition where they won't be forced to purchase all games from the digital library. It appears this decision stems from the competition with the Xbox Series X and S.

PS4 Games Are Better On PS5

Sony has confirmed PS4 titles are improved on PS5.
  • Faster loading times
  • Game Boost (including improved and more stable frame rates)
  • Some titles will see higher fidelity (those with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4k)
  • The PS4 games can take advantage of the improved PS5 UX
The backward compatibility also includes VR games!

Awesome news!

Who thought you wouldn't be able to play PS4 discs on a PS5 disc drive? Anyone?

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I mean they literally already said at the official announcement that in order to play the upgraded PS5 version of a physical copy of PS4 Miles Morales, you needed to buy a PS5 with a disc drive. That should have been a pretty big clue.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I thought that was officially announced a while ago... a lot of titles were only upgradeable from physical copies if you had a disc version, not just Miles. Also backward compatibility was never touted for just digital titles.

Technically it doesn't even have to read the entire disc, it could download the contents online and just do a disc check for licensing reasons, I guess. But yes I think most people expected to be able to pop in PS4 games to the PS5 drive and play them.

The article on playstation.com this morning (which is what GamingIntel is citing) was the first time I'd seen descriptions about boost mode on the PS5, the list of incompatible games, notes about limitations with backwards compatibility (apps, the 'share' menu, the new HD camera, PS4 tournaments, second screen apps, etc.).

Also new today: a Sackboy story trailer!

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I don't know if any of this is news, I know some is information that I didn't know of from Sony: https://support.playstation.com/s/ar...age=en_US&lan=

PS4 games playable on PS5 consoles
The overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles.
  • Select PS4 games will benefit from the PS5 console’s Game Boost, which may make PS4 games run with a higher or smoother frame rate.
  • Although many PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles. In addition, some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles.
  • Before purchasing add-ons to play with your PS4 games on PS5 consoles, please try to boot and play your PS4 games on your PS5 console to see if you are happy with the play experience.
  • Please note, playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a PlayStation VR headset, a PS camera (sold separately from PS5 console) and a PS camera adaptor (no purchase required).
  • Always update your PS5 console to the latest version of the system software.

Compatible controllers on PS5 consoles
  • The DualSense™ wireless controller, DUALSHOCK™4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work on PS5 consoles with supported PS4 games.
  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controller and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5 consoles.
  • For the best experience, use a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller when playing PS4 games and PS VR games on a PS5 console.
  • PS5 games are not compatible with the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller.
  • To adjust the strength of controller vibration on PS5 consoles, go to Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Vibration Intensity.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 consoles (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5 consoles).

PS5 backwards compatibility limitations
  • The SHARE menu cannot be displayed during PS4 gameplay on PS5 consoles. You can take screenshots and images by pressing the create button on your DualSense wireless controller to show the create menu. Additionally, you can use the button shortcuts to start/stop video recording or to save screenshots as follows:
    • Single press the create (DualSense) or SHARE button (DUALSHOCK4) to show the create menu
    • Press and hold the create (DualSense) or SHARE button (DUALSHOCK4) to take a screenshot
    • Double press the create (DualSense) or SHARE button (DUALSHOCK4) to start and stop video recording manually.
  • The HD Camera is not compatible with PS4 games – please connect a PlayStation Camera via a PlayStation®Camera adaptor.
  • HDR is automatically switched on for PS5 consoles. To turn off HDR, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and select SDR.
  • The PS4 tournaments feature is not supported on PS5 consoles.
  • In-Game Live from PlayStation is not supported on PS5 consoles.
  • PS5 consoles do not support the PS4 Second Screen app or game companion apps.

Have they given any info on how to get the PS Camera adapter for VR?

Oh, ok. I was referring directly to what he posted; which I think everyone either was aware of or assumed was a thing already. I have heard of this game boost mode, and wondered why they needed a "mode"... but maybe because it causes issues with some games.

Look, they clearly put "and a PS camera adaptor (no purchase required)."

That is all you need to know... you don't need to know if it is in the PS5 box, or you just submit something and they ship you one... you don't need details!...

It was news to me. This was the first time I had heard for sure that more than 99% of PS4 games would play on the PS5. I'm not saying the info wasn't already out there, I just had not heard it before.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

It’s from a pretty terrible survey. They polled more than enough people to be statistically significant, but only 15% of them were actually able to get in their preorders. So it’s 80% of, like, 51 people.

At least it’s slimmer than Series X. That’s large, but at least lay horizontal, but that storage space on PS5 seems mighty low...

That's good info in those latest pieces. Any reason to think you couldn't play a digital PS4 game on both PS4 & PS5 at the same time in the same house (multiplayer)?

I remember seeing an article awhile back on not maxing out your space on a SSD but can't remember which type of SSD....but while we might complain about the OS taking up around 100GB, the new XBox Steel Series OS takes up 200GB. But I would like to know and hear on if the NVMe SSD's need a bit of...breathing room...like drives from the past as it was usually recommended to only use say 75% of the drive space. With my current PS4 I have a 1TB hybrid Seagate where I leave almost 40-50% unused and have a 4TB USB WD Drive I just play games with. Never been a fan of throwing a bunch of stuff on the drive housing the OS no matter what.
