Oops, I kinda forgot about this. I checked a bit last night and totally failed to recheck this morning.

You are of course correct, but that doesn't mean I have to play the game. I'm confident that within 2-3 months of launch I'll have a system. In that time, I can load up on used games and such.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Not sure if this is old news or otherwise obvious, but the remote has buttons for Disney+, Netflix, Spotify, and Youtube so at least those should be on there day one.

Me, I just want Harmony compatibility day one.

The media remote is a big deal for me. I loved that on the PS3, and was disappointed they never bothered to make one for the PS4.

They did make one (I think they made two) but way way after release.

Do you have a Harmony Hub (the bluetooth one, not the IR one)? That actually works great with the PS4 (though it took a while for them to support it), much better than the wonky integration that the PS3 had (where you had to use a macro to shut down).

Thinking about this more, it probably makes sense for B&M stores to carry way more of the disk versions. Not because they're more expensive, but because the people who come in to buy the digital only ones aren't going to buy games at the store.

I am a little surprised they didn't do what they did for the PS4, which is have a basic remote and then have a media remote with... actually way way too many buttons.

Wasn't that remote from a third party company? The PS3 and PS5 remotes are from Sony themselves. That's the only reason I never bought one for the PS4.

They were, but they were officially licensed and branded worked fine, it wasn't some knock off or anything.

Oh, the PS4 ones were "media remote" and "universal media remote" so maybe they have a bigger one later.

The PS4 remote -- or the one I bought, anyway -- is dogshit. Unlike the always-usable PS3 remote, you have to wake the PS4 remote up by holding the gem, just as if it were a controller. That means if you want to take a break from a movie you've been watching for a while -- by which point the remote would've gone to sleep -- you have to hold down the gem to re-activate it before you can pause. And, despite being asleep all the friggin' time, it gobbles down batteries like no remote I've had in my lifetime.

That was true for the one from 2015 (?) anyway. Maybe later ones were improved, but the one I got was in "kill it with fire" territory.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I think they did improve the design of the PS4 remote somewhat... I actually bought one and never used it because Harmony finally got on the ball with compatibility, but the reviews at least say that you can press any button to wake the remote and the button press will register as well. The battery life/turning off thing, I put that on Sony, the dualshocks are no better in that regard.

It's weird, for the current gen they billed them as media machines but sony didn't put out a remote (and didn't have IR capability) and both systems were actually inferior to the PS3 in terms of playing disks and streaming, etc. I remember the Xbox One had this bug where the audio on Blu Rays was way out of sync (I think we had some arguments here because people swore it wasn't a problem) which they had to patch.

Agreed on both counts. I definitely experienced the drifting audio issues with the XB1 first-hand, and the PS4 wasn't nearly the joy to use as a Blu-ray player as the PS3 was.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I'm having trouble finding info on video/audio outputs. Does this have optical out? I don't really care enough about 4K to replace the plasma in my living room, but I could pick up a 4K TV for my bedroom, as long as the PS5 will work with the stereo receiver I have in there mainly for a turntable.

I don't think it has an audio out or dual HDMI outs (hence the receiver dilemma in the other thread. Even if your tv has optical out, the audio is going to be gimped, but at least then you can route the sound to your receiver). The specs are here:
https://blog.playstation.com/2020/09...ay-disc-drive/

Also the 4 USB ports are different:
1 x USB Type A (Hi Speed)
2 x USB Type A (Super Speed USB 10Gbps)
1 x USB Type-C (Super Speed USB 10Gbps)

I am a little surprised that they didn't show us the UI.

I stood out in the pouring rain at GameStop, but I was able to pre-order the disc version. I am so happy. Now, watch November 12th drag by.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

$400 for the digital might have me picking one up sooner than I anticipated.Once it's confirmed that digital PS4 games are (almost) all playable, I'll probably start looking to make the switch.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

It's not "NOW":

The new console is “99 percent” backward compatible with the PS4 games the company has tested on it so far, Sony PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said in an interview with The Washington Post. In March, Sony said it believed the “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games would be backward compatible with the PS5, so hearing that “99 percent” should work on the new console is assuring, if unspecific.

It better be 100% BC for PS4 games... at least the ones I own and will play

Awesome, thank you. I didn't think about using the TV's audio out. My receiver doesn't have HDMI anyway, since it's primarily all about the phono input. I suppose I could just skip the receiver altogether anyway.

This will (probably) be my first PS ever, so it doesn't really have a home right now among all the other consoles.
