Was just coming here to post this. I'm in!

I wonder what the purpose of this is. Trying to become something viral or give diehards a first crack at pre-orders?

Beating MS to pre-orders without having to announce a firm price or firm date. That's it. Kind of smart actually.

That is diabolical and brilliant. I doubt they want to be in the hardware shipping business though and really don't want to piss off retailers so I wonder how many they'll offer up for pre-order.

I am curious why this is brilliant. Have you not always been able to buy a MS system directly through their store? Not sure about preorders with them. Seems like they just want to build some buzz and are going about it by selling directly.

Video game pricing is *decades* overdue for a course correction. Instead of everything being at $50 for so long, AAA stuff could have been 60 and fun but lesser stuff could have been 40.

We’re seeing some of it now with indie titles being under 20 or so but this is long overdue.

I assume this is talking about the price increase for games and you meant to say 60 and 70 or you live in a different country or something.

And I'll use the same argument I used earlier: we are mainly all movie fans in this forum. Movies have only gotten more expensive to make. Is anyone saying "man, I wish the blockbuster films would cost more to go to, and that the discs and digital downloads were more expensive, because they cost more to make than those smaller films?"

The game companies are not suffering when it comes to revenue, least of all the ones making blockbuster games. $60 for retail at launch seems sustainable to me, it's just that they can now get more. I won't deny them that if the demand is there but I'm not going to argue as a consumer that it's long overdue or anything.

Sorry, I was generalizing. But prices did sit at $50 for a *long* time, when publishers could have started introducing tiers and making this an easier transition. I know a lot of games have been at least $60 for a while, but many were still at $50 they easily could have been 40 or 30.

? What games are 50? I'm pretty sure it's been $60 for non mobile games for at least a decade if not more.

$60 started at the PS3 generation. So yeah, long time.

I think Corvin is saying that taking pre-order "invitations" without a date or price is diabolical and brilliant. And it kind of is. Historically, these companies have had to provide these details before pre-orders go live. Now, Sony is side-stepping that because they know folks will sign up to buy one even if they don't have those details yet. I see four camps of "hardcore gamers" that buy systems at launch, generally speaking: Those who will ONLY buy a PS5 at launch, those who will ONLY buy a XSX at launch, those who will buy BOTH at launch, and those who will buy whichever one they can get their hands on first at launch, then buy the other later. Sony is banking on sign-ups from everyone, of course, but mostly on that last group signing up for the invites, because it gives them a better chance to sell them a console before MS does.

On the other point about direct hardware shipments, I think you're both right. MS has had their own online storefront for ages, but Sony doesn't seem to, at least not anymore. Seems like Sony wants to dip into direct sales for PS5 orders (given the current situation, I don't blame them), but I don't think they're planning to go that route for all electronics.

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I don't think Sony is looking to be a distributor at all... I think their gauging pre-order interest and going to set their price accordingly. Somebody has to blink and I think, by Sony getting pre-order numbers, they can afford to blink first because they'll be able to project their hardware sales... where Microsoft has NO data and will probably have to undercut Sony to stay competitive.

If that leak is true, I'm out. I'm not paying 1100 bucks even with a 2TB HDD, and if that's the price of that model the lesser models can't be that much cheaper.

But that article even says later on that they doubt that's true so I'm not even sure what the point of the article was?

It's beyond stupid for them to do that article. Completely worthless clickbait.

I don't buy that "leak" at all. It's a placeholder to generate clicks. Sony might as well get out of the gaming business if that is legit.

I also like how writers of articles like this like to point out that 825GB isn't large enough for a digital console yet EVERY game has to be installed to the drive even if you have a disc. So 825GB isn't large enough, period.

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Ubisoft is saying only PS4 titles are backwards compatible on PS5:

@Wario64: PS5 is not backwards compatible with PS3/PS2/PS1 games, according to a Ubisoft supprot page https://t.co/j1wTcAApZ3 https://t.co/hnbpndATPi

Is this new news? I don't recall hearing anything about old generations being included or excluded.

re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I wasn't really expecting anything older than PS4 to be supported. PS4 didn't support PS1-PS3 games, why would I expect PS5 to be any different?
