This is quite literally what Xbox tried to do in 2013 and everyone tore them apart for it. Too soon, I guess.

No, they got ripped to shreds because it was a forced digital only system with forced Kinect integration.

But that's what milo bloom is asking for, no? How else would this genuinely be implemented if not forcing some kind of digital 'key' that proves you own the disc?
with forced Kinect integration.
Agreed, that was some bullshit in the end.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

there was some BS about needing to pay a digital-transfer fee when trying to use a disc on a different console too.

Maybe something like the Xbox BC where the disc itself continually serves as the key? It's not one-and-done, like "I showed you I have a disc, so now give me a digital version, and I can put this disc back in the closet for the next few years", but it's not any more cumbersome than, say, playing a PS3 disc on a PS3.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

If you bought a game on a disc, you did so with the explicit understanding that you would have to put that disc into your console every single time you want to play the game. That's how I view it and why I think nobody should have any issues with it.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. You put the disc in the first time and the console reads that you have it and you get the download. If you want to play in the future, you put the disc in so it can check the file real quick but then plays it off the hard drive.

I look at a disc game like I do a Blu-ray or DVD movie, you have to put it in the disc drive to watch or play it.

Downside, you have to use the disc. Upside, you can resell the game after you finish it if you choose.

That's what I always do, basically play games for next to nothing in cost.

Basically like it already works now for PS5 games on disc.

I mean, that's how it works on PS4 too.

I mean, I guess you could make a case that it's installing off of the disc instead of downloading it (for both PS4 and PS5), but really what's the difference? At no time on either console are you actually playing games off of a disc, they just need to be in the drive.

Not if it came with a digital code.

Not exactly what I was getting at. There was not going to be an Xbox One with a disc drive. Digital only. That's what I was referring to, MS forcing people into an all digital world where they control everything.

When was this? There was an optical drive in the initial reveal in May 2013 (along with game box art in the now-familiar green case), and the leaks a couple months prior to that made it a point to mention there'd be an optical drive. MCV posted a rumor in 2012 that there wouldn't be a drive, but that itself was at odds with other rumors that there would be.

There was the whole dumb thing about discs not working as weíve understood them, with restrictions on how physical games could be traded and re-sold, but AFAIK, an optical drive was always part of the plan.

Better breakdown of this new PS+ stuff. Basically, don't expect it to match Game Pass: https://kotaku.com/playstation-unvei...ell-1848716609

Yeah, Game Pass is about having new games available on Day One, Sony has shown no interest in allowing that.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

So PS+ "essential" is just the existing PS+ but with only two games per month now?

What, exactly, is the upgrade path for someone who has PS+ paid up for the next 5-6 years, but doesn't have PS Now?

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I'm not really sure I'll upgrade from the essential plan. While I have fond memories of older games, my experience has been once the novelty wears off, I realize that games have progressed so much that I'm not really interested in something I played decades ago. I ran into this issue with Wolfenstein 3D. It was fun for the first few levels, but I gave up on it after getting kind of bored. Historically, once I've moved on to a new system, I rarely go back and play previous system's games. My backlog from just PS+ offerings is huge. At some point, I might upgrade to the middle tier, especially if I can find discounted subscriptions somewhere.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

yah, I play maybe 2-4 major AAA releases a year, and fill in the gaps with PS+ games or other cheap older ones. Don't really have a need for any of the higher tiers or what GamePass would offer. Just don't have the time or desire to play unlimited games.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I don't think that I will be upgrading from my current PS+ subscription that still runs for two more years. I have enough games from the PS+ games that I acquired over the years on my backlog and if Sony is not releasing Triple AAA titles on Day One like Gamepass, that's an easy pass for me for now.

My only concern will be the quality of games that they will be giving out for "free" on PS+ moving forward. April titles looks a bit lackluster to me.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

At the rate I play large AAA games, if PS+ gives me two a year, that's all I really need. Even if the games are a few years old at that point. I play around two large games a year, supplanted with a handful of smaller games. Granted, that could be because that's what PS+ tends to give me.

Yeah, I’m way too slow on games to justify Game Pass and PS+. This may be my off-ramp to the latter.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I think I already own every announced PS++ game for PS4 & 5, so I will keep my current status. Unless they do something awesome like Game Pass did and allow me to upgrade for $1 for all remaining time.
