Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Controller update is live as well today.

Side note: the ps5 update switched my audio output settings from AV Receiver to TV and made everything sound like shit. Just check your settings and what not if anything seems off.

I bought a ps4 pro for the sake of VR quality and wound up using it only a handful of times before giving the VR stuff away. It also gathered dust like mad (same with my Xbox One).

Weirdly, I've already put hundreds of hours on the PS5 largely due to being at home all the time this year. But agreed if you have a solid gaming PC neither console has the exclusives to really drive em.

You can't use it in the PS5 without the heat sink because it would get too hot. At first I didn't want to buy a separate heat sink because I'm not at all handy, but it at least looks to be dead simple to install one and the one I got from Amazon was only $15 and I know it fits (some do not which would be a big problem.
Seems like almost none of the drives I'd want (1TB w/heatsink) are available anywhere I look, but it sure seems like this may be the way to go then, $180 + $15. Because on newegg, for example, that drive w/heatsink is $250.

By the time I need to use the expansion slot, I'll hopefully be able to get a 2TB for a decent price. Maybe Black Friday 2022.

Same. I've already paid the high price for two of them in my new PC earlier this year. I'm going to hold off on adding one to PS5 as long as I can.

I know you only said "solid" but building a state of the art gaming rig is probably harder than buying a PS5 at this point.

Well, he said if you have one, not if you are trying to build one.

It's just a little easier and you know it will fit without doing any research. But yeah, that is the way I went and don't think it's a bad idea at all to go this route. I will update later today after I attempt to do it. Wish me luck

I meant it more if you already own the box, not building one right now. It's chaotic on all fronts atm.

I can attest to that as I've toyed with buying a Pre-Built PC for the last 4-5 weeks, looking at parts to build one and checking PS5 to XBox Series X potential drops weekly and scalpers on Ebay....and add in stories to articles from various Gaming to PC Hardware to Tech Sites all stating the same thing; Chip Shortages will continue past September 2022 and possibly into 2023...

Toshiba came out last week and said it wasn't going to get better and in fact might become harder to find consoles...they make the Power Regulating Chips and other components. It's crucial parts that simply cannot be changed and redesigned easily and quickly....
Games console shortages could last until 2023, Toshiba warns (nme.com)

I really came close to ordering a PC but the video card prices are sending the Gaming PC Prices into orbit. To really get a worthwhile rig that is in the middle of the pack and last a while $2000 is bottomline. Retail Cards are going double and even triple the value...

So since I'm now working 5-8 hrs a day and wife is home on PC working 7hrs a day, I simply don't have the time to deal with and combat bots, groups and people at home that have time and resources to try and land a PS5. I have a friend at work whose wife works at Home and she was able to get two PS5's in 2 weeks about two months ago. He said she has a Laptop, PC, two phones all ready to get in when these drop. She's been trying for 6 weeks now to get another for a friends and she said it's got more difficult to even get into the que on Sony; too many groups, Bots and others now. Plus, it seems fewer are dropping each week as before...use to see three place a week get them and now some are getting re-stocks 2-3 weeks later....

I made the decision to just bite the bullet and order from a re-seller instead of risking the chance things might get worse than better. I'll probably still look for a PC come early next year and get Xbox Pass due to Bethesda alone with Starfield (Next November) and ESO 6...

This guy claims that you get better, optimal Heat dispersal from the built in heat sink model because the company knows exactly where to make the contacts to optimize the heat removal. I suppose that’s true. But If this works almost as well, I don’t think it’s a compelling reason to shell out the extra $50 (not that you can find the dedicated heat sink version anywhere anyways).

Added bonus : Best Buy matched the current $179 Amazon price today. I bought my WD_black 1 GB for $199 thirty days ago.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Okay I haven't really kept up with this thread. But, we're now approaching the 1 year anniversary of the PS5 and is it still in short supply and hard to find?

I checked a few online retailers including Target, Amazon and Gamestop and none have this in stock. Is there still heavy demand for it almost a year later?

I see on ebay it's going for like $600 to 1,000. I'm assuming there's some kind of parts shortage and COVID has caused manufacturing delays.

Read thru my post above...and in short, yes still in short supply just like XBox Series X and a lot of PC Video Cards...and Demand is still higher than availability/supply on all fronts. Heck, even The Big Three Automakers have plants idled due to Chip Shortages and have too many vehicles in storage awaiting Chips......two months ago someone interviewed some Tech Congressman (Has a NIT Degree) and he put it simply..."There's two places Chips come from...Japan and China...and Japan gets most of theirs from China"

Please remember also that the global supply chain is still very strained (my job for the last 20+ years). Not only are things in short supply, the means to move those things is also in short supply.

I've been able to help a few friends get Series X and PS5s at this point. I get that some people have jobs that won't let them jump on when a tweet triggers, but yeah, it's fairly do-able right now.

Yeah, working from home means that my wife and I both had our phones by our sides with with twitter notifications enabled, that's how we got ours. If we had been in the office, that's probably more systems that would have gone to scalpers who make it their day job.

NICE--congrats. Of course the heatsink I had in my cart yesterday is now no longer available. Dang it.

BTW, some reviews on Western Digital indicate it may not even be better and may be worse, perhaps a quality control issue w/the built-in heatsink. I just ordered the regular one with another highly rated heatsink from Amazon.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Got an email from PlayStation with the subject "Confirmed! Your exclusive invitation to order a PS5 console."

It's a legit email from Sony letting me know that I can hop in line at 2pm tomorrow and have a chance to get a PS5... but I'm not going to do it. I don't need one until Horizon:FW comes out next year, so I can wait.

Since this is so damn hard to find right now, I’m not going to even bother going on some wild scavenger hunt for it. And I won’t pay scalper prices on eBay. Fuck those leaches. I’ll wait until it’s widely available whether that’s 6, 8, 12, 18 months from now.

Yes, follow the right people on Twitter but then also for Amazon, put the system in your wishlist and when you see the alert that they have them in stock, go to your wishlist and order it from there. That’s how we got our XSX.
My wife has the GameStop account so she got the alert for the member sale and was able to get the PS5 bundle.
