The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (9/20/19: Switch)

I couldn't let it stand that we have a thread for a Doug Flutie football game and not one for a Legend of Zelda game. The framerate issues are definitely disappointing (and caused me a headache which hasn't happened on subsequent play) but otherwise I'm about 4 hours in and it's a stellar Zelda game. I owned the GBC version back when it came out but I can't remember much about it or if I ever finished it so I'm basically playing a brand new game. It also has the cutest damn amiibo I've ever seen.

Enjoying the game, and also got that Amibo and love it. Haven't played much but it's cute and looks so nice. See the frame rate issues but it's not a huge factor for me so far.

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (9/20/19: Switch)

Binged through most of this over the weekend. I'm on the last dungeon. The graphics are so good; it looks like you're playing with toys rather than a video game. It's hard to describe.

Slow down has been noticeable but not during any parts where it matters. Mostly just when it loads the overworld when you leave a house/dungeon. My ammibo hasn't arrived yet so I'm not sure what it offers in-game.

I believe that it's all dungeon builder stuff.

Ah, good to know. I haven't bothered with any of that yet, although I have found a couple of the slabs to give the guy.

I'm currently trying to flesh out the statue collectibles. So far, I think all of them have come from that grapple hook game; which is great cause it's easy AF.

Been playing it a lot. It really is super simplistic (which is probably why I loved it when I was a kid) but it's a joy to relive it. There's definitely some slowdown at times, but it's been mostly negligible in handheld mode.

I thought the same thing until I got back to the Eagle Tower...fuck that place and its annoying layout. I remembered not liking it but I couldn't recall why. Now I remember...

Yep. The Links Awakening amiibo unlocks a Shadow Link dungeon set and then any other Legend of Zelda amiibo unlocks one of 5 other dungeon sets. Once you've unlocked all 6 it pops up a message saying you've gotten all the unlocks.

Wife downloaded it on Friday and she and my son have been playing. It looks amazing, like Rankin-Bass stop motion but we haven’t noticed any frame rate issues.

Rankin-Bass invented the frame-rate issue.

I was referring more to the style of the models in the game but I see what you mean.
I’ll watch for any issues like that.

Kinda eating my words now that I'm going for the stupid piranha plant. That thing is way too big.

Thankfully with the ability to save anywhere you can just save scum it. I just save right before I start that game and if I don't get the item in like three tries I just reload my save.

You don't even have to do that. Just exit and re-enter the house. That'll reset the positions to where they started. Regardless, that damn plant is way too tall. I don't think there's any way to trap it while it's standing up. Don't get the money back but it's only 10 per try.

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (9/20/19: Switch)

I’ve already had to look up help online twice in the second dungeon. Once to figure out how to kill the Shy Guys (I just wasn’t in the correct position during my early attempts) and another to figure out how to get the nightmare key. I got the clue from the owl but the only way I would’ve figured it out would’ve been either by accident or looking it up.

Fun game so far, but I hope I can eventually work through more of this in my own.

10 per try is a lot of rupees early game when you don't have a lot. I've burned through 100 rupees trying to get stuff before I realized about the save trick.

True; I've basically purchased everything I need at this point so blowing the money is no issue for me.

I’m enjoying this more than Breath of the Wild so far. Kind of like that it feels a bit more simplistic. The graphics are nice, but the way things in the distance look a bit hazy/blurry is kind of rough on the eyes after a bit.

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (9/20/19: Switch)

I was in my early 20s when this first came out and I played it a good bit then, though I never finished it. Just knowing that so many others are playing and enjoying this 20 year old game gives me nostalgia by proxy.

I need to find time to actually sit down and play it ...

It really is amazing. I never played the original release but I was able to pick it up when the DX version hit GBC. Funny how you remember certain things even when the presentation looks completely different.

I was a pre-teen the last time I played it (25 - 26 years ago) and I still remembered a surprising amount of it. One of my favorites back then, and still really enjoying it.

Top 5 Zelda game for sure, even though it's not as challenging.

It's a great game but definitely not in my top 5. I don't have any portable Zelda games in my top 5 but I would have Minish Cap above this.

The Oracle duology was also very good. Not sure how well they're remembered.

That would be awesome if they remade those next. I don't think I ever finished them.
