Video games that have better graphics than their sequel?

What video games actually have better graphics than their sequel?

I feel like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 looked better than 2.

Most sequels would typically have better graphics than the game before them, so I wouldn't say so.

I'm sure it's not at all what you're looking for, since it involved going to the Gameboy from the SNES, but Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past obviously has better graphics than Link's Awakening.

The Mario Kart games alternating from console to handheld means MK64/Super-Circuit, Double-Dash!!/DS, MK Wii/MK7 all probably qualify too.

I think you're on to something. I think switching consoles is the key here. How about any game that had a sequel on the Wii? Dead Rising: Chop til you Drop?

I'm going to say Phantasy Star 3. The enemies and their animations were shit compared to Phantasy Star 2.

I would argue the original NES Zelda looks better than its sequel.

Re: Video games that have better graphics than their sequel?

There are probably many examples in the transition period from 16-bit (or higher) 2D to early 3D. Rayman 2's polygonal graphics are more advanced than the original's hand drawn graphics, but I would say that Rayman's graphics are better (especially today). But with games that aren't numbered in series, the question of what is a sequel comes up. Symphony of the Night looks more appealing than the N64's Castlevanias, but surely those aren't considered sequels to SOTN.

That abomination called Crackdown 2. It may have actually had better graphics but it certainly wasn't as appealing.

Same with Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, the art direction and budget really hampered it.

Wind Waker had a simpler style and I think it holds up a lot better than Twilight Princess.

Valkyria Chronicles went from PS3 to Vita

Thanks for all of the replies, and good points about some sequels being on a portable system as well as the transition from 2D to 3D video games.

My memories may be way off, but I remember thinking that Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds looked worse than the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the OG Xbox.

Crackdown 2 looked terrible and it was made by a different company so it's entirely possible that it looked worse than the original.

Maybe he's saying SMB2 has better graphics than SMB3? It's a completely different art style, on the same hardware, so I could see someone making that argument.
