Yeah, it's a great game but traversal is a slog. Even if you speed through it you're going to be spending a LOT of time riding a horse from place to place.

Weird, I thought the general consensus has been that it's great but not the best.

Yeah, I actually see a little more reaction to Rockstar's "formula" with Red Dead 2 then I expected, so I don't think it'll get the backlash for being lower on some publications.

Gamespot's full list, not ranked other then Red Dead at the top.

GOTY: Red Dead Redemption 2
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Hitman 2
Tetris Effect
Return of the Obra Dinn
Marvel's Spider-Man
Dead Cells
God of War
Into The Breach
Monster Hunter World

Polygon's list so far:
3. Florence
4. Tetris Effect
5. Celeste
6. Red Dead Redemption 2
7. Into the Breach
8. Monster Hunter: World
9. Marve's Spider-Man
10. Assassin's Creed Odyssey

IGN's Nominees.

It's cool to see Tetris Effect on so many lists. I didn't think it was selling too well since it dropped down to $20 at Gamestop and Amazon in such a short period of time. Unless that's just some holiday sale or something.

RDR2 is good and all, but I just don't see how it can even compete with GoW for GOTY. Yes, looks pretty and has a good story, but so does GoW, and it's also fun as hell from top to bottom.

Can I vote for Diablo 3? It's the game I played most this year

I've only played Battlefield V from that list. So... that's the best, then, right?

Me neither. Apparently it's just a short mobile game with some interesting story telling, made by the designer of Monument Valley.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_(video_game)

It won best mobile game at the Game Awards. Maybe i'll check it out, apparently it takes less then an hour.

Monument Valley was pretty awesome. Never played MV2... Florence doesn't sound that interesting to me.

Celeste was damn good though. Damn good. Up there with Ori and the Blind Forest, but for different reasons.

In your opinion, yes. That is of course unless you hated it, then it would be your worst GOTY.

It's interesting to see God of War and RDR2 currently tied for first place and Spider-Man only two votes behind in our poll. But I guess that only since one of those came out on XB1 might have some effect on that.

To be fair, no version of Tetris should ever be more than $20.

Nonsense. Every memorable game in the series has been over $20.

Return of the Obra Dinn was #2 for Polygon, which I assume means God of War is #1.

A new generation of broken GameCube controllers.

Re: Game of the Year - 2018 edition

For me I would have to go with RDR2. The scope of the game, the technology, and the story are just too good and memorable for me. The more I got to play with Author, the more that I started to feel for him, and also feel that he is a complex man. It really does a lot for the video game medium. As for why I picked it over the other ones I played on the list, here are the reasons why:

God of War: I never finished this. The game looks pretty, plays well, and is fun. I even liked the direction they took Kratos. But for me, the game fell apart because I do not find Norse mythology to be as interesting as Greek mythology, so I did not feel as involved as in past GOW games.

Spiderman: I liked this game, but for as much fun as the combat, gadgets, and story were it had some glaring issues. The story felt somewhat overstuffed, the puzzles sometimes felt out of place, I despised anytime I had to play as Mary Jane and Miles, and the game doesn't reach the highs of the first two Arkham games nearly as well.

Far Cry 5: Entertaining way to kill some time, but probably the weakest of the series since FC2.

Decided on a whim to buy and play this while killing time visiting in-laws. Helped that I have a bunch of Google Play credit from doing surveys.

...It was ok? I don't really think it deserves to be anywhere near the top of overall GOTY lists. It probably takes 30-45 minutes to play, and the gameplay is really just swiping through scenes, putting together some puzzles, and dragging/dropping a few things. The story is cute but predictable, and didn't think it was particularly unique or special.

I guess it's a unique way to tell a story, but ultimately forgettable. Even the art style doesn't stand out in any significant way, which I think would have helped elevate the material.

Sounds like what I thought of Monument Valley. It was a shorter, simplified version of Echochrome that received endless praise.

God of War cleaned house at the Dice Awards walking away with 9 out of the 11 awards it was nominated for. RDR2 and Spider-Man took home 1 each.
