Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time. Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format. Available for pre-order at select retailers across the US and CAN, each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to their TV, a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP) on December 3, 2018 – a historic date for all of us at PlayStation. Good Luck getting this in the Holiday season. No doubt this will be hard to find. Fuck, I have no more HDMI ports. |
Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
As much as I want one I'll have to wait till all 20 games are announced to see if I pick one up. The 99.99 msrp is lower then i was expecting though.

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I pre-ordered one just for FF7 and Wild Arms.

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
Is it available for pre-order at Amazon?
|
Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I have a PSone and all the games I'm interested in.
...I still might buy it. |
Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I can still play all the PS1 games that I want on my PS3

Preordered at Best Buy. I have fond memories of the original and it’ll be fun to have it with my NES and SNES Classics too.

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
They have a lot less first party games to select from compared to Nintendo to fill out their 20 games, although I imagine that the Crash and Spyro games will make up several of the 20, maybe Parappa and Ape Escape, then they can fill out the rest with some of the top sellers. Come to think of it, these "classic" systems can only contain "E/T" rated games, not M games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, etc, which will eliminate a lot of great games.

I did the Bestbuy preorder, I may cancel once the final game list is released. I find these old 3D polygon games don't age nearly as gracefully as the 16bit 2D games. |
Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I preordered at Best Buy too, unsure if i'll keep it as it will depend on the games and if I already own the bulk of them elsewhere. I already own a bunch of different versions of FF7. Plus, a lot of PS1 era games don't hold up as well as NES/SNES games because of the early 3D.
Here are preorder links for those that haven't hunted it out themselves: Best Buy - https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-pl...?skuId=6301601 Gamestop - https://www.gamestop.com/consoles/pl...dwOpZw_2R375hg |

What the heck, I placed a preorder for now.

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I’m not as nostalgic for PlayStation (particularly PS1) as I am for classic Nintendo. Plus seems a bit pricey to me as an impulse buy type of item and as mentioned there aren’t a bunch of great exclusive titles like on Nintendo that make it a must own. Think I’ll pass.

IN! Had a $10 rewards expiring in a few days, so was able to use it...

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
Wow... I was able to pre-order before the scalpers hoarded it all. I win.

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I bet Sony is much better with quantities and availability then Nintendo is.

But keep 'em coming, I would kill for a mini Dreamcast. |
Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
When I first say this, I thought "cool"... then I realized there isn't much nostalgia (from me) for this system. I played the hell out of Madden and SSX... and I doubt either will be on this system. Not to mention that 20 games is a bit light, IMO.

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I will pass on this one but when Sony releases a PS2 Classic, it will be mine! I had so much fun with that system.
|
Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
Yeah, I definitely have fonder memories of the PS2. Graphics hold up a bit better on some of the games too. That early polygon 3D style really dates the PS1/N64 era.
|
Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I think this and N64 are the last we're going to see of these things for a while, considering the massive jump in processing power that needs to be emulated by cheap hardware and the rising cost of controllers and storage. We'll talk PS2 when a future Raspberry Pi model can run Dolphin decently.

Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
One thing I remembered about the PS1 was it having a major copyright flaw with the their games. They could easily be burned onto CD roms and some MOD chip could be added to the system in order to play pirated burned games. A friend of mine had one of those and eventually gave it to me when he got bored of it. I later sold it.
I'm probably 20/80 on me potentially getting this system. I have so many games to play on the PS4 and XBox One as well as owning the NES and SNES classics. Just not enough time in the day to play and enjoy all these. |
