Game of the Year 2017

Too soon? Sorry if i stepped on anyone else's toes that wanted to create this, was thinking about it especially with the Game Awards on tonight. I went through Metacritic for some of the highest rated games of the year as well as a few other gaming sites for their own nominations, so apologies if I missed anything major.

Also for fun, previous years!

2016 - Uncharted 4 - not a lot of votes, but beat out DOOM and Overwatch.

2015 - Fallout 4 - beating The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne

2014 - Other? - looks like there wasn't much of a consensus, although Alien: Isolation led in votes for a specific game, followed by Shadow of Mordor and Far Cry 4.

2013 - The Last of Us - impressive list, with Last of Us beating out Tomb Raider, GTAV, and Bioshock Infinite.

Horizon just eeked out Assassin's Creed Origins for me because it is a new game entry.

Horizon: Zero Dawn and Super Mario Odyssey would be the top of the pack for me.

Voted Herizon. Easily the best game I played this year with Uncharted close behind.

Biggest surprise for me was Knack 2.

Biggest disappointment for me was Injustice 2.

Man, Fallout 4 beating Witcher 3 is a travesty.

I loved Horizon and voted for it, but I feel a little dishonest since I don't have a Switch (yet) and feel like I would have loved Zelda and Mario as well.

But a new IP coming out of the gates that strong certainly counts for something.

My favorite game on the list is Persona 5 but I couldn't give it my vote because it follows the same formula as the rest of the series. Going with Zelda since they took a risk of re-making the series into something new and it succeeded massively.

Persona 5 is my pick.

I'd have Yakuza 0 as my runner up with Assassins Creed Origins rounding out the top 3.

Zelda for me.

But we've got some great other killer app games this year: Mario, HZD, Resident Evil VII, South Park, Cuphead... others I'm sure I've forgotten.

Zelda for me. Played Horizon shortly there after and found it more tedious than fun.

Mario Odyssey in a not too distant 2nd.

I keep forgetting that RE7 was this year. Surprised that didn't make it on the poll.

It was on my original list, I probably should have included it.

I've played exactly 0 of the games on that list.

Well, that would be GotY every year!

not much. it's been a very, very slow gaming year for me. combination of being busy and there not being a lot that caught my eye.

Only games I have played this year are:

Batman: Telltale
South Park: Fractured But Whole
Shadow of Mordor
Mass Effect: Andromeda

well of course!

Of those, I'd say SP: FBW is probably my game of year, since it is only half of my list that was released this year.

For me it's Resident Evil 7 - even over The Evil Within 2 - I remember being blown away by the demo and even though the second half doesn't live up to the first and the DLC is barely decent, it's an amazing game.

Runner up is Outlast 2 - It was a bit too short but they managed to make it even creepier than the first - the second one didn't rely on boo scares (even though they are present) instead they really creeped you out with the characters, creatures, and environments - the score was even more amazing this time around as well - that's high praise considering the score from the first game was amazing as well.

Witcher 3 or Agents of Mayhem.
Divinity was way too micromanagement (if I'm remembering correctly) and I haven't played a lot of the other games.
I was really into Life is Strange but haven't finished it yet (I haven't even finished Fallout 4, I think I'm stuck trying to get into some collapsed building toward the end of the main storyline.)
Haven't played a lot of the other games - slow year for "hot new" games for me.

Super Mario Odyssey

It's among Horizon Zero Dawn, Mario Odyssey, or BotW for me, with Nioh trailing close behind. Unfortunately despite buying the expensive edition I didn't even get to crack open Persona 5. Man I didn't get much use out of my Xbox One this year.

If there was a separate fighting category I'd put Injustice 2 out there. It's weird, I like DC a lot but I'm not a big fan of the design style or even play style of these games (I'm a SF over MK guy myself), but the game is great, there's a ton to do, and despite there being random draws I don't feel the need to P2W.

Re: Game of the Year 2017

I'm leaning towards Middle Earth: Shadow of War. I haven't finished it though. I'm in the second Act and should probably finish before a final vote.

I put 150 hours into Zelda but what percentage of that was wasted on traversing the map? It feels like every minute of Middle Earth is fun. No wasted time cooking food or climbing a mountain only to find nothing there.

Re: Game of the Year 2017

AC Origins is hands down my game of the year. I feel like they did a great job refreshing a franchise that I already enjoyed. I'm about 40 hours into it and still have over half of the world to explore, and I'm in no hurry to be done with it.

BUT my most played game, and likely runner up for GOTY, is Battlefront 2. Strip away the loot boxes and dogshit progression and all the other controversy, and what I see is a very fun arcade FPS that looks and plays really well, and is set in the Star Wars universe to boot.

It was between Zelda & Mario for me, and I thought about it hard - I didn't really feel like I wanted to go back to Zelda, but I would love to go back to Mario, so Mario it is!

Re: Game of the Year 2017

I think I will love Horizon when I play it, based on all the comments I've read online.

I chose PUBG because that's the game I played from the list and I had a lot of fun. And of course it has revolutionized video games.
