I ended up screwing up at 703 so I went to the leaderboard to see the top score and some dude has 55,555.

After 50 the speed stops increasing and if you get the timing down you can pretty much do it indefinitely.
So for the jump rope game I read somewhere that its easier if you do it with a scooter. Apparently the scooter has a much more repeatable jump so if you get the timing right, its very easy. I haven't tried it myself yet.

There’s a memory challenge I’m having an issue with. It’s in the Mushroom Kingdom and basically you get an image of Mario and you have to recreate his face from memory. The first time isn’t hard at all but the second all you have to work with is the outline of the picture. On top of that the pieces of the face disappear after you place them. I’ve gotten close and even tried to cheat by using a piece of paper to outline the features of his face but can’t get it.

The racing challenges are a pain in the ass.

Against the Koopas in the Mushroom Kingdom? If so use Cappy to hit the white flowers that give you a boost.

I just meant in general, not just the Mushroom Kingdom. I didn't notice the white flowers... but I'll watch for them. That... would obviously make a big difference.

I use the screenshot function. Then I go back and forth, piece by piece.

There's usually a short-cut or a way to cheese the run. Also, never just run. You should be long jumping and rolling.

An example of a cheese. In the Lake Kingdom, if you run to your left there's a fish lady by the wall. Jump on her head, throw then leap to your hat, wall jump, then throw your hat again to get over. This is going to shave like 30 seconds off your time instead of swimming through the cavern.

As far as I have seen, every race (except the caveman level) seems to have a significant time saving element shortcut. It's a matter of knowing the level. New Donk City has a really fun one.

I think the only races I’ve done were two with the Koopas, a couple of those RC challenges, and one in the snow level.

There are Koopa races on every level.

Finally beat the Darker Side of the Moon tonight. I died so often in the middle section, that I think I could have done the lava zone blindfolded by the end of it.

Now to collect the remaining power moons, I've only got about 530, so still a ton to grab. Though I might take a break for a bit.

I played that level once, and decided I wanted to save it for last. I'm at 711 moons right now. Do you have an estimate of how long it took you to beat, and how long it takes to get through it without dying?

The first race is usually easy, it's the second that I absolutely hate, it's infuriating to watch that sparkly green Koopa fucker just disappear and be half way through the race.

Otherwise it's just a lot of long jumps, rolling, and occasional cap jumps.

I have hardly any moons compared to most in here. I think I’m at like 230 or so.

It took me a few hours, and I wouldn't be surprised if nearly half of my deaths through the entire game where here.

Maybe I'll just stick with saving it for last then.

Darker side wasn't as hard as beach volleyball, but I finally got them all

Damn! Congratulations!

Can I ask if you Googled stuff or used any outside sources to help you get there?

Maybe two or three moons. One for playthrough strategy on one of the dark side doors you had to do without cappy and one for finding an artwork moon that I was struggling with (The "KEEP" one by the lake). Those are all that I remember at least.

I also looked up how to find two of the items on the capture list that I couldn't find even after beating the game.

I did manage to track down all of the purple coins on my own, although I probably spent hours in Bowser's keep looking for the last 3.

edited to say, I did spend a few hundred coins on hints from the blue toad guy, but that doesn't feel like cheating since it's in game.

Ha, I just Googled the "KEEP" artwork last night. I knew what stage to look on, but man I really overthought what it actually meant. It was a lot easier, and I should have gotten it without Google.

Maybe I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but this is hands down my GOTY. I loved ALL. OF. IT.

I did not, and will not, get every moon, but I did beat Bowser for the first time in any Super Mario game I've ever played, and that's enough of an achievement for me. I'll probably still mess around with the couple areas that unlocked after the main story, though.

The Dark Side of the Moon is hard. I can beat all those bastards individually and with health refills but it’s pretty hard going back to back without getting more health.

Some of the levels are even better after end game. Give all of them a shot.

I'd say most are. The story portion of the game almost felt like a prolonged tutorial.

So there's more to them than just getting more moons? Like new areas within the worlds?

I played about an hour of Yooka-Laylee last night and all it did was make me want to play this game so I went Moon hunting this morning and got up to 665. I've knocked out all the moons and purple coins on the first three worlds.
