Re: Sports games and nostalgia...

One of the things that sucked about NHL 95 was the clock ran at 4x speed (or whatever it was) even during the Power Play. Because the 2 minutes flew by in 30 seconds or so, despite leading the league in goals by far, I was always at the bottom in Power Play percentage. I guess it balanced out though since I was always first in Penalty Kill percent.

I think subsequent games slowed Power Play to real time to fix that oddity.

I know some of the newer sports games are probably too convoluted and complex for some of you.
If you Google around, you can find Super Tecmo Bowl with 2016 rosters. I d/l the file but have yet to play.

Re: Sports games and nostalgia...

I loved Super Dodge Ball (NES) back in the day. All those different techniques and players. And NES Oro Wrestling was a classic. Starman was the best.

In the arcades, even though it was a money sink I loved Cyberball.

I don't mind the realism in the NBA 2k series or Madden, there's still an arcade like experience there if you manage settings and get used to the game. The one sport I find that I can't enjoy as much with the realism is baseball. I know Sony's game is technically amazing and all, I just can't get into it.

My favorite sports gave ever will always be NHL 94, it had the most fun way of checking players I have ever played in a hockey game. Other favorites from my genesis days.

RBI Baseball
There was football game sega put out it had Joe Montana on the cover, I don't remember the name though.
NBA Jam

I always appreciated NCAA Basketball for the SNES, the way it played in third person and used mode 7 graphics to pan around to the player receiving the ball.

I would pay top dollars to play up to date versions of World Series Baseball, Super Tecmo Bowl and 2k football.

I found it, I thought it had a specific name, but it was just NFL 94, when Joe was with the Chiefs on the cover.

Did they have a "Sportstalk" version with the digitized announcers too? I guess that was probably Joe Montana 2.

I have hated Madden since day one... and I mean day one. I remember taking off from work to pick up my copy and fucking hating it.

I liked Madden when I was a teenager...but probably because the only football I knew prior was Play Action Football and Tecmo Bowl. So it was the first one that felt realistic. But I haven't played a Madden game in probably close to 10 years (I think 09 was the last one)...unless we count the last NCAA Football game (14) which was always a clone of sorts. But we all know the best football game ever...

So amazing that Madden basically got scared and signed an exclusive agreement.

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but There is no Super Tecmo Bowl.

Re: Sports games and nostalgia...

I tried buying a recent NHL game, and couldn't play it. Too complicated.

But my favorites back in the day were

NES Hockey and Blades of Steel
NES Golf and Lee Trevino's Fighting Gold
Arch Rivals
MLB Baseball (still have this one oddly)
RBI Baseball

Steel Cage for NES
PRO Wrestling NES
Heavy Shreddin' NES
California Games
T&C Surf Design
Skate or Die
720

for 16 Bit Consoles

Joe Montana 2: Sports Talk Football

Mutant League Football
Mutant League Hockey (I cannot believe these have not come up yet)
Saturday Night Slammasters
NHLPA '93 (you kid fight in this one)
NHL '94 better all around gameplay.

NBA Jam

I gave up on sports games around N64/PS1 they got too realistic and complex.

For some reason I forget those, but I loved them both. Always wished they'd reboot them for the current systems.

It was a brilliant play by EA, because even if the exclusivity ends, there's no way another company like 2K can bring up a football franchise back to life without a lot of hiccups.

It looks like Football is coming back, a Kickstarter was run for it recently, and it's being made for PC. So I hope they're planning a port.

Yep, operationsports.com had a blurb about it... some in game graphics too.

When I was about five years old, my father pulled out the All Star Baseball from his youth. It would have been from the early 1950s. I thought it was pretty cool. I only was allowed to play it with him a few times, though.

Anyone else have an electric football set when they were kids?

Yep, some good memories there, "epic games". Funny how just hitting a player piece with a tiny felt football counting as a completion made perfect sense back then.

Definitely my favorite. I loved customizing my crib.
