When was the last game that you were able to figure out how to play on your own which didn't require 20 posts of people explaining it to you?

Borderlands 3. i didn't need help with that. Doom: Eternal. i think a couple others. haven't asked anything about Cyberpunk yet. but, i'm not really sure what i'm doing in that tbh, but it's fun. i'm just trying to juggle too many games at once. spoiled with this quick resume. but, i can't focus on 1, let alone, the 4 i have started at least a little. i don't even know what to stick to, though leaning toward Hitman...

You seriously have around 100 posts in the Borderlands 3 thread asking for help.

nah, more posts of admiration. i mean it's a good game. nothing really compares to original, but i didn't think i needed too much help with this one. maybe some boss fights. i know i posted about Gigamand boss and my journey conquering him, i believe, but other than that pretty easy game imo. Fun to be sure, but not a game where it takes too much thought. basically find that one gun and blast the fuck away!

**edit** i actually have 205 posts in that thread. eek!

It's like a two minute process to upload a game save. And every PS4 --> PS5 upgrade game does the same thing for game saves. Not exactly the huge deal some people make it out to be.

Sure, but you also have to ensure the PS4 version is fully updated before you can migrate your save. It's unnecessarily convoluted, regardless of how long it takes. There's something to be said for when these things "just work" naturally.
Same game, entirely different paths to keep your save files.

I've only done this for one PS5 game before -- Spider-Man: Remastered -- but for that, there was a single icon on the home screen, and I could quickly choose between the PS4 and PS5 versions.

I'm not sure if it was because I already had the PS4 version of Avengers installed, but it wasn't immediately clear to me how to even get the PS5 version, and when I did figure it out (after seeing a promo box highlighting it) and downloaded that second version of the game, as it did not happen automatically, I only saw one icon for the game on my home screen. There was no visual indication which version it was. When I opened it, it was the PS5 version, but I wasn't sure how to get the PS4 version to open. As I was testing different things, I opened the Switcher, which told me I was currently playing Marvel's Avengers. Marvel's Avengers was also listed under Recently Played, with the same text and same icon (again, no indication of platform). On a lark, I tested the version under Recently Played, and as luck would have it, that was the PS4 game.

The actual transfer went through fine, but the road to get there was not smooth or intuitive, and I'd like to think that I'm savvier than most about this sort of thing.

That's different. You are talking about choosing between the PS4 and PS5 version. I was referring to the process of transferring your game progress from the PS4 version to the PS5 version. I have done this in Spider-Man. It requires a quick game save upload from the PS4 version to the cloud, and then a download of the game save once launching the PS5 version.
Spoiler:

It's not different, to my mind, if all those headaches are required to get to the point to be able to transfer progress.

At least I'm not alone! Paul Tassi had it even worse.

Borderlands 3 was the only one that was an annoyance to me and that is because I had already deleted the ps4 version so I had to redownload the ps4 version and then go into it and upload my character and then download the ps5 version.

Oh lord I'm Oldboy level of confused. I saw the ps5 upgrade available so I downloaded it before knowing there were problems and now the ps4 version isn't showing up at all anymore? Am I screwed?

To clarify, I didn't have either version on the ps5. Previously I could see I could download the digital edition for the 4 but now nothing.

I seriously don't understand the question. There isn't a "problem" with the PS5 version, it's just harder to import your game progress to the PS5 version than the zero-effort-required XSX version.
Did you previously own the digital PS4 version? I had a disc based PS4 version (with gorgeous Steelbook). As I had never played the game yet, I didn't need to import game progress here. I put that PS4 disc in the PS5, didn't install it, got offered a free digital version of the PS5 game (which requires the disc be in the console to play the game), downloaded it and was good to go.
What issue are you having? What version of the game did you buy? Do you need to import your game progress from the previous version?

The question makes all too much sense to me. You didn't play the previous version, so you're not having to deal with the same headaches as some of us.

Right now, I have the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game installed. When I installed the PS5 upgrade, the PS4 version vanished from my main menu. (Avengers PS4 was the last game I played before the upgrade.) Not that there's any way to tell, since there is no option here to choose which version of the game to launch, as there was with Spider-Man: Remastered, and nothing saying "PS5", "PS4", or whatever. (Though I realize now that if it doesn't list a platform, it's the PS5 version.)

One of these is the PS4 version, and the other is the PS5 version. Can you tell which is which?

Ah, but the obvious answer is to go to my Library, only...wait, no, still just a single icon:

To require launching the PS4 version, yet going out of their way to (1) obscure how to get the PS5 version (maybe I'm dense, but it wasn't immediately apparent to me) and (2) obscure how to launch the PS4 version once the PS5 version is installed is a shitty, confusing, and generally indefensible experience.

I guess their expectation was that people would upload their saves before installing the PS5 version...?

Whereas when a game on my Xbox Series X gets an XB1->XBSX upgrade like Wreckfest recently did, I had to do literally nothing. It automatically setup the latest-gen version, and my save worked without jumping through any hoops.

A solution I figured out too late:

Game Library -> Your Collection -> Filter -> By Platform -> PlayStation 4

As far as I can tell, that convoluted path is the only way to expressly choose the PS4 version.

Re: Marvel's Avengers (9/4/2020: XB1, PC, PS4, Stadia)

I ended up downloading the PS4 version again, doing the save migration, then downloading the PS5 version. Iím not sure if I needed to do that, especially since Iím not all that concerned with my progress carrying over, but I did it anyway.

This process, no matter how simple it is (or is supposed to be), is too cumbersome for the end user.

I'm actually thinking about getting a disc version of this now on PS4 and just starting the PS5 version from the get. Got to decide on whether I want to pay an extra 10 bucks at Best Buy for a supposedly included steelbook than a copy at Walmart. It is 39.99 at Best Buy and 29.99 at Walmart. Anyone have this steelbook?

Yeah, people complained about accidentally launching the PS4 version of these dual platform games on the PS5 so they did an update which defaults to the PS5 version and you have to actively seek out the PS4 version if you want to play that one instead now.

Which would be great if I didn't have to launch the PS4 version to do the save transfer. None of the guides I've seen about transferring Avengers PS4->PS5 data have said anything about how to access the PS4 version, so maybe a path like library filtering is incredibly obvious to most people, but it didn't occur to me at all. (It's a feature I've never used, and I think I've only accessed games through the Game Library once before.)
