SNES. We already had a family Sega Genesis, so this was "my" first console, and I bought it with some money that I made selling some old toys at a garage sale.

Technically, it'd be the Atari Flashback. But of real consoles, it'd be the PS3.

I didn't have a console between the SNES and my PS3. Did buy a few computers during those years.

PS1

My roommate in college had one, and I played Wild Arms on it quite a bit. When he moved out, he sold me the console and a few games for cheap. I haven't bought anything but Playstations since.

N64 for me. Picked it up with the gold edition of Ocarina of Time.

Didn't get it at launch, and had to save up a little.

The original NES. Nothing like watching it coming down that conveyor belt at Service Merchandise and knowing it was all yours.

SNES. I was in 8th grade. My school was having a magazine sale that you could earn cash in, along with a top prize of $300 for the person who sold the most. I busted my ass, won and ended up with enough to get the console, Pilotwings and F-Zero.

1st system I ever bought with my own money was a Sega Genesis around 1993-94.

I used to be into collecting sports cards, but once the hobby started dying out in the early 90's, I sold off pretty much my entire collection and had enough to buy a system.

I got the NES as a gift, and I think the SNES was a gift too. I can't remember for sure if the N64 was a gift but I may have bought that one on my own. If it wasn't that then it would be the PS2.

N64 and a PS1, around 1997-1998. I was about 12 or 13 at that time, and my sister and I combined our vacation money to buy both systems when we were in Germany (stayed there every summer with the grandparents while growing up).

Wii U. Might sound like I'm really young, but the last system I had before that was an N64. I played at friends' places and was too busy with school to play much. I've bought 3 other consoles since my Wii U purchase. In no hurry to buy any more for a long, long while as I've got a huge backlog I haven't even touched from all my systems.

Re: What was the first video game console that you bought with your own money?

PS1 for me. I got the NES for Christmas in the 80s and that was the best Christmas ever. I was amazed at the graphics of Super Mario Bros and all I wanted to do was play that game all day. I also got the SNES for Christmas which was exciting too, but after a few years, I got burned out on gaming. My time was spent college, work and playing guitar.

Then in 97, I saw the graphics for Final Fantasy 7 and just had to buy this thing.
