Sonic Mania - 8/15/17

You’re not dreaming. Since the 90’s, Sonic has advanced from the 2D world into 3D, and has crossed multiple platforms along the way. But what would have happened if Sonic had continued his 2D glory after Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles? The world is about to find out.

If you weren’t one of the 1,100 fans who pre-purchased tickets to the sold-out event during San Diego Comic-Con, or you missed the live stream; big news for PS4 players was announced: our next major Sonic game is coming to PS4.

Sonic Mania brings fans back into the 2D world of platform games with nostalgic pixel-style art and core classic gameplay by reimagining iconic Zones and Acts from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles. Before you get too lost in nostalgia of the 1990s, the game is also adding completely new Zones with all-new Acts and bosses into the mix.

Sonic Mania will be available as a digital download, and is being developed by SEGA of America in collaboration with PagodaWest Games along with Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley. We’ll have more details later, but for now, rest assured that Sonic and your PS4 will be good friends sometime in Spring 2017.

I would love to see an old school Sonic game done right. I'm crossing my fingers on this one.

This is pretty neat, they basically let fans and modders make the new game.

Jesus - that's almost a year away. Why are they hyping games so soon?

Pretty cool but too bad it's only for PS4. Maybe I'll have one by then though.

That's how it always is, how often do we not have some sort of preview of a game at least a year out?

It's for PS4, XBone, and PC.

Exactly. What a weird complaint. The majority of the time that they first announce a game or movie it is around a year away.

Yeah, he just posted an entry for their blog, which obviously isn't going to mention the other platforms.

The fuck you guys talking about? "Majority"? Bull & shit! Sure, once in a while, just some major triple-A games might get trailers and/or announcements a year off, but never smaller indie downloadable games like this one - outside of kickstarter, very few small-scale games get announced a year out.

There's such a thing as announcing too early, since by the time it's out, it doesn't feel new/fresh anymore.

Inside, The Witness, Adr1ft, Assemblance, Aliennation, Layers of Fear, Firewatch, Oxenfree, No Man's Sky.

These are pretty much the main indies that came out this year and everyone of them was announced and shown at least a year out. In about half the cases they were announced and previewed 2+ years from release.

I'm also ignoring the fact that you're calling a new Sonic game a "small indie game".

Yeah Sonic isn't an indie game. The new Zelda isn't out until next March either yet Nintendo hyped it already in June.

Agree with everyone else, it's more rare that we get an announce + release in less then a year.

You're being dumb. Name aside, those are all far bigger games than this new Sonic. I didn't mean indie "developer", just indie size, like what most 2D platform games these days are.

Song of the Deep, for example, Insomniac, but a small 2D game that was revealed 5 months before it was released. That's more normal.

Like everyone else who is in agreement with me cases like Song of the Deep are the outlier not the norm.

I don't think you know what indie means. A game being a 2D platformer has no effect on the size of the team. I'm willing to bet the team working on the Sonic game is larger then 99% of the games I mentioned.

You've just made the biggest point on your own. What is bigger than name in this F'd up world?

It wasn't mentioned in the thread starter, but it's worth pointing out that the game was announced as part of a Sonic 25th anniversary event. Year away or not, they obviously wanted the announcement to come with this occasion.

It sounds like you don't know what indie means

Independent video games (commonly referred to as indie games) are video games created by individuals or small teams generally without video game publisher financial support. Indie games often focus on innovation and rely on digital distribution.
Questyen was dead on with the indie game examples. Those are games made with small teams. Just because the games have a little more polish on them, doesn't make them any more or less indie.

re: Sonic Mania - 8/15/17

My point is that development time for these games is much shorter than it is for the others - not much longer than from now until release. I was using "indie" in regard to the scale of the game. The sonic advance or rush games, along with the last one that was downloadable, for example, are pretty much the same as this, and those came out very soon after announcing, if not immediately after.

I still think you're wrong, but regardless wtsang summed it up anyway - it was announced as part of Sonic's 25th anniversary, so that's why they're hyping it up now.

Here's a preview of another Sonic game that will be released around the holiday season in 2017.

Pretty cool collector's edition. Not sure how I would feel spending $70 and not getting a physical copy of the game though.

Deluxe "SEGA Genesis" style Collector's Box
12" Classic Sonic Statue featuring SEGA Genesis Base
Flip the power switch to trigger the "SEEGAA" startup audio!
Metallic Collector's Card with Sonic Mania Download Code (digital game code)
SEGA Cartridge Cast with Golden Ring

I somehow missed the original news about the collector's edition of this but it's pretty cool looking. Amazon Prime members can lock in a pre-order for $55.99 which is $14 off of regular price. I decided to bite even though I wish there was a physical copy of the game included.
