Re: NES Classic Edition (30 games; 60 bucks; 11/11/2016)
Reggie talks about the success and discontinuation of the NES Classic Mini:
According to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé, the total global sell-in for Nintendo's pint-sized version of its 1980s Nintendo Entertainment System is 2.3 million. The last official figure we've seen arrived several months ago, when the company said it had sold 1.5 million NES Classic units worldwide. At that point, the presumption was that the system would continue to be sold indefinitely.
"We had originally planned for this to be a product for last holiday," Fils-Aimé told TIME. "We just didn't anticipate how incredible the response would be. Once we saw that response, we added shipments and extended the product for as long as we could to meet more of that consumer demand."
Which leads to the 2.3 million sold figure, a very respectable achievement for a system that plays games three decades old. When I asked Fils-Aime about the potential for the NES Classic to resurface as a product in future years, he declined to add anything to Nintendo's existing statement, which stipulates that the company has "no plans to produce more NES Classic Edition systems for NOA regions."
But Fils-Aime did suggest the reason why the company pulled the brakes on a system amidst unprecedented demand. "Even with that extraordinary level of performance, we understand that people are frustrated about not being able to find the system, and for that we really do apologize," he said. "But from our perspective, it's important to recognize where our future is and the key areas that we need to drive. We've got a lot going on right now and we don't have unlimited resources."

That answer reminds me of this scene from It's Always Sunny

it's important to recognize where our future is and the key areas that we need to drive. We've got a lot going on right now and we don't have unlimited resources.
I can disagree with the choice but it's logical and plainly stated. If they would just operate this way in general I think they could avoid much of the ire and derision while still making their usual "unique" choices. Not "the NES Classic is not limited" (it clearly was), not "we're sorry" (you're clearly not), not "we're working to meet the demand" (clearly not hard enough). Just "this is our choice and why, now we're all moving on". Why they've gone with the bullshit mixed messaging up to this point is beyond me - it clearly wasn't going to get them anywhere. Then again, that IS the default mode of shills like Reggie..
I will say this, though - Nintendo may not be Microsoft but they certainly do have a LOT of resources. I find it hard to believe it would be that difficult to keep both systems in production. Oh, and fuck that 2DS XL monstrosity.

Sorry.
I just think the timing is incredibly galling. "No matter what we do, we just don't have the ability to make enough NESes for all of you.. (week passes).. Oh, and here's this freshly engineered, feature-reduced version of a platform we'll be putting out to pasture in under two years!!"
CLEARLY what the people were looking for.

I'm so confused at what this even means. And yeah, Dan's post is blank for me too. Learn to embed!

Nintendo basically said "wait, people figured out how to put games including snes on it and we can't stop them? Nope, stop making it so we can sell 50 snes classics next year!"

The new 2DS has one key difference, though: it's still a platform that encourages sales of peripherals/games, as opposed to one that really only has one accessory (which they incredibly decided to make even more rare than the system). I mean look at Switch sales, look at the price (!) of those accessories and the insane attach rate of Zelda.
Also, that seems like a lot of NES Classics, I wonder how many are sitting in scalpers' garages though.

Desktop or mobile? Looks fine on mobile. :P
Also yeah, the quote is kinda dumb. He's basically saying Nintendo is releasing yet another iteration of the DS line which seemingly no one asked for, but can't keep the NES Classic in production.

Your use of the word monstrosity made me think you were upset about it for either looks or functionality.
Theoretically, it's also barely priced any lower than the regular New 3DS. That's just ridiculous as a value proposition.

Eh, by MSRP it's $50 cheaper then the 3DS XL for a feature that not everyone uses or likes (myself for instance). Or as I read elsewhere, something that parents are advised not to have 3D enabled for young kids. Given the big library still of 3DS games, I can see it still selling versus a twice as expensive Switch.

I see that - and I'm not saying it won't sell - but it seems like it's too much for what it objectively offers. Isn't the regular 2DS pretty much an $80-100 machine at this point? Too big a jump.
At the end of the day, I just don't like the removal of a feature fundamental to the original design. I don't always use the 3D myself but I feel like it should be there.

If anyone's still desperate for one of these, Thinkgeek has them:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/nes-classic-bundles/
BUT you have to buy it in a bundle with a bunch of other useless shit.
Just one option left: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/kknn/

Of course they would bundle it with a bunch of shit that they would never move otherwise
I guess they are looking forward to the SNES release to get rid of some more shit taking up space in their warehouse.

Clearly there was a bigger demand for these, I'm not sure what Nintendo gets by not producing more.

So besides that Thinkgeek nonsense, Amazon had thousands of them that they were selling at their popup trucks last week and now I get a GameStop email about a contest where they're giving them away all month.
Kinda fucked up that they had no stock for people to just buy them that wanted them but now all of a sudden they have all this stock for promotional nonsense.
